EMMANUEL AYETTEY 27

ASSISTANT PRODUCER/

DV DIRECTOR, FREELANCE

Nominated by: Dominique Walker,
executive producer, Voltage TV
Emmanuel Ayettey grew up on a
London council estate and, after
being expelled from school, spent
a year at a pupil referral unit.
That didn’t stop him finishing his
education, gaining a degree in
digital media and soon landing
his big break in TV through his
brother, who was personal trainer
to a production manager.
Love Productions then spotted
Emmanuel’s potential, hiring him
as a researcher on BBC2’s Muslims
Like Us and series two of BBC1’s
Famous, Rich And Homeless.
He’s now assistant producing
Voltage TV’s complex Channel 4
factual entertainment production
The House That Moved To Africa,
which involved wild camping in the
bush to build and maintain access
to male members of a tribe.
Voltage’s Dominique Walker,
who worked with Emmanuel on
the shoot, says his diligence is
matched by journalistic instincts
and an eye for a story. “He under-
stands the narrative beats needed
to make content compelling for a
mainstream audience,” she adds.
Emmanuel’s technical skills and
ability to get amazing reveals also
come in for praise: on a Channel 5
doc about male suicide, he compe-
tently operated a variety of
cameras, filming and directing
scenes with vulnerable contribu-
tors as well as ensuring compli-
ance and protocols were followed.
Walker says Emmanuel can
become a “very talented” series
and exec producer and is already
“a much-needed voice for diversity
in our industry”.
