T

om Garner has, to an
extent, become the
Bear Grylls of the
National Hunt
weighing room – an
adventurous traveller
who is prepared to put up with a
bit of discomfort.
On Thursday, he rode
Winston C, a horse once owned
and clearly named by Bill Gredley,
to win the Grade One New York
Turf Writers Cup at Saratoga in

upstate New York, a month after
landing the AP Smithwick
Memorial Steeplechase on the
same horse.
Garner, 26, who has been based
with Oliver Sherwood for seven
seasons as second jockey, had
broken his collarbone only five
days earlier. But he sought and
accepted the sound medical advice
of a well-known former jockey
noted for a high pain threshold:
“Take some painkillers and, if it
still hurts, take some more.” And it
was not until it started rubbing
against his body protector pulling
up that he felt sore.
Winston C is favourite to land
the Eclipse award for the United
States jump horse of the year and,
while no one is claiming he would
win a Cheltenham Gold Cup, it is
nevertheless quite a feat for the
former Harry Fry hurdler, who
won three two-mile events last
spring before Garner was involved
in sourcing him for the US.
The entrepreneurial jockey, who
is a partner in a pizza-van business,
is the son of Sebastian Garner, who

drives a horse ambulance – last
week York, yesterday Cartmel –
and runs the Shetland Pony Grand
National series, which tours
country shows before winding up
at Olympia Horse Show at
Christmas. Naturally, it was how
Tom started, along with his
brother, Ollie, who was also a
jockey for a while.
But while Ollie quit the saddle,
started up a hay and straw business
and has graduated to become a
bowler-hatted steward at
Olympia, Tom, whose
most successful
association in Britain
was with Sherwood’s
front-running Rayvin
Black, has never been
considered for an office
of such responsibility
after writing off one of
Olympia’s tractors
while helping
out there as a
14-year-old.

Unable to quite reach the pedals,
most notably the one connected to
the brake, and consequently
unable to stop, he managed to get
his tractor to mount one parked
right in front of the post-show
drinks party for officials.
Trips this autumn include
another back to the US for
Winston C’s next outing at
Belmont next month, and to the
Czech Republic for its Grand
National, the Velka Pardubicka, on
the second Sunday in October.
Last year he led over the last
only to fade into third.

I

t is stressful enough for a
father to watch his early
teenage daughter riding
out racehorses for the first
time, wondering (as I well
know) whether she is going
to end up (in my case –
she is riding out for
Andrew Balding)
in Basingstoke
town centre
should the
horse so wish.

The secondary problem, of fending
off amorous Flat jockeys, is, one
suspects and hopes, a couple more
years down the road.
Not far up the road from
Kingsclere, Ralph Beckett’s
14-year-old daughter, Katinka, has
just started riding out for her
father, a man who, given his record
with jockeys, regards them a bit
like the late Capt Tim Forster,
which is to say as a necessary evil.
On her third morning riding out,
an unnamed jockey was in
attendance to ride work, dropped
back in the string to check out
what he believed was the new
blonde employee and delivered a
chat-up line that was up there with
“Do you come here often?” and
should, at the very least, be subject
to an improvement order.
“So,” he said, “have you been
working here long?” Of course,
there is no reason why he should
have known, but before she could
tell him of her relationship to the
trainer, every other rider in the
string had taken great delight in
informing him.
