The French and Brazilian
leaders have been locked in a
diplomatic spat over the fires
tearing through the Amazon.
Mr Macron is spearheading
efforts for an international
effort to tackle the fires and
called for emergency talks by
G7 nations over the weekend
at the Biarritz summit.
Critics have blamed the cri-
sis on Mr Bolsonaro’s anti-
environmental rhetoric and
intentions to develop the
Amazon region.
Mr Bolsonaro, whose coun-
try is not in the G7, has in
turn accused Mr Macron of a
‘colonialist mentality’. He
said the French leader’s
‘improper’ attacks on the
Amazon were ‘unreasonable’.
In July, Mr Bolsonaro can-
celled a meeting with
French foreign minister
Jean-Yves Le Drian – get-
ting a haircut instead.
The row has seen other Bra-
zilian politicians, including
Bolsonaro’s son Eduardo,
take pot-shots at Mr Macron.
Education minister Abraham
Weintraub called him ‘an
opportunist idiot’ and ‘a pres-
ident without character’ in a
flurry of tweets on Sunday.
On Friday Mr Bolsonaro
Jr, who is tipped to be the
next ambassador to Wash-

protests in France head-
lined ‘Macron is an idiot’.
BRAZIL’S controversial
president Jair Bolsonaro has
mocked his French counter-
part Emmanuel Macron’s
wife after weeks of feuding
between the two leaders.
Mr Bolsonaro – who has been
dubbed the ‘Trump of the Trop-
ics’ – commented on a photo of
himself and his 37-year-old wife
Michelle alongside another of Mr
Macron and his wife Brigitte, 66.
The pictures were posted on Face-
book by one of the Brazilian’s sup-
porters, accompanied by the cap-
tion: ‘Now you understand why
Macron is persecuting Bolsonaro?’
Mr Bolsonaro, 64, then appeared
to endorse the sexist nature of the
post, responding with: ‘Do not
humiliate the man, ha ha ha.’

policy, hit back angrily.
Asked about the incident in Biar-
ritz, where world leaders had been
gathered for a G7 summit, the
French president described the
remarks as ‘extraordinarily rude’.
‘He said very disrespectful things
about my wife,’ Mr Macron added.
‘It’s sad, it’s sad first of all for him
and for Brazilians.
‘Brazilian women are probably
feeling ashamed of their president.
Since I have a lot of esteem and
respect for the people of Brazil, I
hope they will very soon have a pres-
ident who is up to the job.’
