BRIDGE MASTERCLASS

PETER DONOVAN

LHO opens 1♥, and your partner doubles. What
action would you take on each of these hands,
after next hand passes?
IT IS so important to have rapport and understand-
ing with partner about these situations. For exam-
ple, he must be cautious, when he hears your agreed
negative response; and you must be confident that
he is not going to bid again freely unless he has at
least 17 honour and distributional points.
Your hands here are significantly better than yes-
terday’s, but you don’t see prospect of game on the
first two, unless partner can bid again. So, on hand
(a) you bid a negative 1♠, but be positive, if partner
responds on the next round.
Bid 2♦ on (b) which partner will note is not a total
negative. hand (c) merits a jump of 2♠, which is not
forcing, but suggests that game might be on if part-
ner is better than minimum. holding as little as
♠KQxx ♥x ♦KQxx ♣Kxxx, partner will expect to
make 4♠ opposite (c), but can he bid it?
Generally, if you have an eight-loser hand with
an assumed fit, you will expect to make an invita-
tional bid.
