CRITICS’ CHOICE
PUT the kettle on and get
the biscuits out as the
much-loved amateur
baking competition
returns for a new series.
Judges Paul Hollywood
and Prue Leith will cast
their eyes over the goods,
while Sandi Toksvig and
lovable oddball Noel
Fielding return to help — or
accidentally hinder — the
hopefuls. There’s an extra
contestant in the tent this
year, making a baker’s dozen
(pictured) and more than
half the contestants are still
in ther 20s and just one over
40 — a sign of how trendy
baking has become. First up
is cake week, and some of
the bakers go nuts making
fruitcake. But you will marvel
at their childhood dream
birthday cake Showstoppers
— they are all truly creative!
PICK OF THE DAY
RESCUE PARTY
Saving Lives At
Sea, 8pm, BBC2
IN THE first of a new
series, brothers Will
and Hal Richardson
(pictured) in the
volunteer lifeboat
crew at St Davids in
Pembrokeshire are
called into action
when a plane makes
an emergency crash-
landing on a busy
beach — what drama awaits? On the Wirral,
a crew try to rescue a poor horse stuck in
the mud, with the tide coming in fast...
MAKEOVER SHOW
Love Your Garden, 8pm, ITV
THE lovely show returns, with more
deserving people getting garden
transformations from Alan Titchmarsh and
his team. This first episode is emotional
as Alan meets fellow gardener Daniel
Bradbury; at 32, he’s one of the youngest
people in the UK with Alzheimer’s. Daniel
can sadly no longer build a garden for
his toddler twins — can Alan help?
COOKERY CHALLENGE
The Chefs’ Brigade, 9pm, BBC2
FOR their penultimate service, the brigade
travel to the Alpine region of the Savoie,
where they are given a crash course in the
art of French cuisine before taking on a
Michelin-starred chef and his Gallic crew.
CHARITY EVENT
Sink Or Swim, 9.30pm
TO RAISE money and awareness for Stand
Up To Cancer, 11 brave celebrities have
agreed to take part in an ambitious relay
swim across the Channel. In the first of
an inspiring four-part series, we meet
the celebrities, who include the Olympic
gold medallist Greg Rutherford, The Last
Leg presenter Alex Brooker, Love Island’s
Wes Nelson and television presenter
Diane Louise Jordan as training begins
and the reality of the task hits home.
