BATTLE
OF THE
GIANTS
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
‘I’m disappointed I didn’t win the event, but I think in a couple
of days I will have had a refresh and be happy about heading
to the tour.’
Norwegian Viktor Hovland, who turned pro after winning the silver
medal at the US Open in June, is so good that Ryder Cup captain
Padraig Harrington thinks he might walk straight into Europe’s
team next year. On Sunday he did enough with his runner-up finish
in the Korn Ferry Finals to earn his playing privileges for the
2020 PGA Tour season which — in typical golf style — starts in just
over a fortnight.
four majors? Consistency all
season long, or consistency in
the four events that matter
the most?
If truth be told, it wouldn’t be
much of a debate outside the land
of the greenback. Koepka would
win hands down.
But McIlroy’s relatively poor
performances in the four Grand
Slam events shouldn’t blind us
from what he has achieved over-
all. Winning the two biggest prizes
on offer at the Players Champion-
ship and the FedEx Cup in the
same season is not just something
to bring a smile to the face of his
bank manager.
McIlroy also won the Vardon
Trophy for the best scoring aver-
age for the third time in his career
— and the only other players to
achieve that aged 30 or under
were Woods and Tom Watson.
Week after week he has been in
contention and, while Sundays
were unkind too often for it to
be considered a great year, on
the final Sabbath of the
PGA Tour season he showed the
sort of resilience and desire
that defines both great players
and rivalries.
Summing up the pair, Rory the
global ambassador will now
embark on a mini-tour of Europe,
playing in Switzerland this week
and at Wentworth in a fortnight.
Koepka, barely able to conceal his
disdain for the routine, is taking
five weeks off.
Like all the best head-to-heads,
the pair are clearly pushing one
another. ‘I’ve been guilty of going
into Sundays being a bit too
relaxed, trying to treat them like
Thursdays and Fridays, and
clearly they’re not,’ said McIlroy.
‘In Memphis, I watched Brooks
shoot 65 and dominate the tour-
nament, dominate me. I realised
that if I want to be the best player
in the world again, I need to be
like that, and I thought I did that
here. I guess the ultimate
compliment I can give Brooks is
that I wanted to be a little bit
more like him.’
Koepka was equally respectful.
‘Even when you’re playing against
Rory, he’s the most fun of any
player to watch and man is he
tough to beat when he’s on form,’
he said.
‘He really grinds it out and I
enjoy the challenge of taking him
on. I didn’t think I could beat him
here and hats off to him, he was so
impressive to watch. Hopefully,
we can stay healthy and have
many more battles.’
If Rory can overcome the golfer’s
block that so plainly hindered him
at the majors this season — and
beating Koepka head to head for
£12.2m ought to help enormously
— there is no obvious reason why
that shouldn’t happen.
At 29 and 30 respectively, Koepka
and McIlroy are entering what are
normally considered the prime
years of a golfer’s life with the gifts
and focus to shape the sport over
the next five years.
Both have four majors each
already and, while McIlroy has a
ton of other victories on his
resumé in comparison to Koep-
ka’s relatively meagre offerings, it
is the latter, of course, who has
been making all the noise recently
in the Grand Slams.
Who’s your money on to come
out on top?
A
RE WE about to see
a genuine rivalry
break out in golf?
Goodness knows,
there have been
enough false dawns. But
Rory McIlroy versus Brooks
Koepka is surely our best
shot at one since Tiger
Woods and Phil Mickelson
contested what would
prove to be an unequal,
decades-long battle.
On a memorable Sunday in
Atlanta, McIlroy showed he is up
for the fight with a comprehensive
dusting of Koepka to win the
FedEx Cup and its mammoth first
prize of £12.2million.
Spicing up proceedings nicely,
he spoke of the sweetness of
revenge, after Koepka had done a
similar demolition job on him at
the WGC FedEx St Jude Invita-
tional in Memphis a month ago.
In outplaying the world No 1 at
the Tour Championship at East
Lake, McIlroy switched the
narrative and sent out a two-word
statement: game on.
‘I’m sure this is just the start of
many such battles we’ll have on
Sundays,’ added the Northern
Irishman. Judging by the way
the pair have dominated the golf
landscape this year, it is certainly
looking that way.
In America, a serious debate is
going on as to who should be the
Player of the Year. Is it McIlroy,
with three wins and 11 other
top-10 finishes in 19 starts on the
PGA Tour? Or Koepka, with three
wins and four top-four finishes,
including one victory, in the

NO SURPRISE to see American
Solheim Cup captain Juli Inkster
go with experience for the
match against Europe at
Gleneagles next month.
What was an eye-opener,
though, was in naming her two
wildcards yesterday she left out
the most successful American in
the event’s history.
With five rookies in her side
already,
Inkster filled
out her roster
by going for
31-year-old

impressive at

at Woburn —
and Stacey Lewis, 34.
It meant there was no room for
41-year-old Cristie Kerr (above),
who had played in every
Solheim Cup since 2002 and
claimed 21 points for her team,
but who has been struggling in
recent weeks.
‘I’d have picked her in a
heartbeat if she had shown any
form,’ said Inkster, plaintively.
The eagerly awaited match
will take place between
September 13-15.

with America’s three
