THINKS BORIS CAN’T SUCCEED

economist Gerard Lyons is a front-
runner to be ennobled.
But it is thought Brexit Party
leader Nigel Farage will be snubbed
again – despite his desperation to
be recognised.
The Mirror is campaigning to
abolish the unelected chamber.
It also emerged yesterday that
President Trump plans to host next
year’s G7 at his Trump National
Doral golf resort in Miami. He said:
“They love the location, they also
like the fact it is next to the airport.”

a post-Brexit trade deal could be
struck within a year. Responding to
Mr Johnson’s warning that a UK-US
deal would take a year, Mr Morrison
said: “I would like to think we can
move quicker than that.”
Meanwhile, it was claimed the
PM wants to put Leave-supporting
allies in the House of Lords to guar-
antee we quit the EU on Halloween.
Most in the Upper House oppose
a no-deal exit and sources say No
aims to “restore the balance”.
The Mirror understands an initial
batch of six peers will be appointed,
paving the way for more later. As
well as pub boss Tim Martin, the

think it’s the job of everybody in
Parliament to get this thing done. I
think it’s what the people want, I
also think it’s what our friends and
partners on the other side
of the Channel want.
“They are very enthusi-
astic about getting on with
the future. They regard
Brexit as an encumbrance,
an old argument.”
The PM repeatedly
refused to rule out
suspending Parliament to
force a no-deal departure. But he
was boosted by Australian Prime
Minister Scott Morrison, who said

to prevent a hard border between
Northern Ireland and the Republic.
German Chancellor Angela
Merkel last week gave him 30 days
to come up with alter-
natives. Mr Johnson
said last night: “It’s a big
job but we think it can
be done. It all depends
on how seriously they
wish to get a deal.”
Labour chief Jeremy
Corbyn will today host
a meeting of party
leaders in London in a bid to block
no-deal. But insisting we will leave
on October 31, the PM warned: “I

DAYS TO GO

Iran nuclear row

‘violence’ threat

DONALD Trump threatened “very violent force”
against Iran last night unless Tehran revamps a
deal to curb its nuclear ambitions.
And the US President said he was open to
meeting Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani.
Shortly after entering the White House, he
pulled America out of a pact signed by Barack
Obama, along with the EU, China and Russia.
Other signatories have stuck by the
agreement, which Iran is accused of violating.
But speaking at the G7 summit, the President
said: “They can’t do what they were saying they
were going to do because if they do that, they
will be met with really very violent force.”

£16m to help put

out Amazon fires

G7 leaders last night pledged £16.3million to help
tackle blazes raging in the Amazon.
Satellites have recorded more than 41,
fires in the rainforest so far this year, with more
than half coming this month.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “We can’t
just sit back as animals and plants are wiped off
the face of the planet.”
Earlier, Donald Trump snubbed talks on
tackling the fires and climate change.
French President Emmanuel Macron excused
his US counterpart, saying: “He wasn’t in the
room, but his team was. The US are with us on
biodiversity and the Amazon initiative.”

Paxo: Today’s Tory

MPs are the worst

BBC veteran Jeremy Paxman says under Boris
Johnson the Conservatives could be the “worst
bunch” in the history of politics.
The former Newsnight host, 69, who
described himself as a “one nation Tory” in 2014,
added: “I used to think David Cameron was the
worst Prime Minister in modern times. Then he
was succeeded by that cornucopia of failure,
Theresa May. Now we find ourselves [with] a man
you wouldn’t trust alone with your sister.”
Writing in the Radio Times he asked: “There
comes a point when the citizen begins to suspect
what’s wrong with political life is not individual
failure, but of some rot deep within the system.”

Ex-PM Brown calls

for Brexit inquiry

GORDON Brown has called for an independent
probe into the dangers of a no-deal Brexit, to be
considered by the House before the go-ahead.
Mr Brown fears potential disruption to imports
of medical supplies risks “putting lives at risk”.
And the former Labour PM said MPs should
seize control of the House of Commons agenda
to expose the impact of crashing out of the EU.
He said: “They should pass a law that says the
Government must produce an independent
report on the consequences of no-deal. That
should be before the House before we go ahead.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Britain will
quit the EU by October 31, with or without a deal.
