MANUEL PELLEGRINI has ordered
his West Ham players to avoid
another cup humiliation.
The Hammers lost 4-2 at AFC
Wimbledon in the FA Cup last
season and Pellegrini
wants no repeat at
renowned giant-killers
Newport, managed by
Michael Flynn (right).
“It is very worrying,
this game,” said manager
Pellegrini. “We know this is a team
that eliminated Leicester and drew
with Tottenham.
“We had experience of this last
season with Wimbledon. So we
must put all of our minds into
continuing in the Carabao Cup.”
CHRIS WILDER has told his
Sheffield United summer signings
to seize their chance tonight.
The Blades boss is set to play Oli
McBurnie, Ravel Morrison (below),
Phil Jagielka and Ben Osborn
against Blackburn.
And he’s banking on
them all catching the
eye to give him a
Premier League
selection
headache.
Wilder said: ”There
will be changes because
it’s important for those
players not in the team to get
some minutes.
”We expect to go well in this
cup whatever team we put out.”
JOTA says Aston Villa’s £22million
record-signing Wesley is destined
for big things.
The Brazilian opened his account
in Friday’s 2-0 win over Everton
and Jota says Wesley
(right) always believed
in himself.
He said: “I was
really happy for him
because I know he has
worked hard. Friday was
the first one and I think he will
score a lot of goals. He was fine, he
believed in himself.
“He has changed league and
changed country and I think he did
well in the first two games – you
can’t score in every game.”
DANIEL FARKE says there is no
chance of buying Patrick Roberts
even if he becomes a Norwich star.
The on-loan Manchester City
winger (below) is set for a
competitive Canaries debut tonight.
That will be a rare
appearance in English
football for the
ex-Fulham man, who
had season-long loans
at Celtic and Girona.
Farke said: “There is no
chance of us buying him because
we can’t afford him.
“But we totally believe in him,
he’s a brilliant lad full of potential
and has the ability to change a
game.” Keeper Ralf Fahrmann, on
loan from Schalke, may also debut.
NATHAN JONES fears home
advantage for Leeds could see Stoke
suffer even more punishment.
The Potters lost 3-0 to Marcelo
Bielsa’s side on Saturday to intensify
the pressure on boss Jones (left).
And he warned: “Leeds
at home is a difficult
game, Leeds away is
even more so but it’s a
big game. You see real
character now in players,
in staff, in everything and
that character has to come through
because we have to change things.
“This team, this group of players,
the management and the staff are
underachieving at this point in time.
“And we have to find a reason for
that and change it quickly.”
RALPH HASENHUTTL is ready to
give Shane Long the chance to
stake a claim in his plans tonight.
The Ireland striker has been frozen
out of all the Saints’ three Premier
League games this season.
But Long (left) is set to
start at Fulham and
Saints boss Hasenhuttl
said: “At the moment I
have Che Adams and
Danny Ings. Danny has
scored and Che is the other
central striker.
“Shane is an older player, an
experienced one, but I am sure we
will need him this season.
“He is still positive and working
well and waiting for his chance. I am
sure he will get this chance.”
Lee is the latest kid off
the Derby production line
and he has set his sights
on rivals Forest tonight
TONIGHT
KICK-OFF 7.45
DERBY boss Phillip Cocu is
determined to carry on where
Frank Lampard left off.
Cocu is giving more kids a chance
as Derby eye promotion from the
Championship and another
memorable Carabao Cup run after
they knocked out Manchester
United at Old Trafford last year.
Homegrown youngster Lee
Buchanan, 18, is the latest teenager
to step off the production line.
Buchanan (above) scored the
winner at Scunthorpe on his debut
in the last round and knows exactly
what a cup tie with bitter rivals
Nottingham Forest tonight means.
Ex-Barcelona star Cocu (right)
has brought stardust to Pride Park
and yet Buchanan says the new
manager is down to earth and
committed to the club’s philosophy
of producing young players.
Buchanan said: “The gaffer is very
good with the senior players and the
youth as well. He’s not too fussed
about your age just as long as you
are playing well.
“With the teams he’s played
for and the number of
international caps, he’s had
a great career and has
great experience.
“So you know whatever
he does on the training pitch,
he knows what he’s talking
about^ because he’s been there and
done it.
“A local derby against your rivals,
you always want to play the best you
can and get the best result.
“I’ve always been a Derby fan and
it does make it feel more special.”
Buchanan clearly did enough in
the first round to convince Cocu to
play him in the first team and he
started in Saturday’s draw with
West Brom in the Championship.
Defender Buchanan joined Derby
at 14 and grew up supporting his
local club while also admiring Rio
Ferdinand at Manchester United.
He says the dressing room is
“buzzing” about the arrival of
another United legend as
Wayne Rooney is joining as
a player-coach.
He added: “It’s given us a
buzz, we can’t wait for him
to come in January and I’m
sure he’ll be a good influence.
“He’s had a great career as well
so hopefully he can help all us young
lads have a good season. Promotion
must be the aim – I think it’s got to
be at a club like Derby.
“I really admired Rio Ferdinand,
the way how much he loves his club.
He played not just for himself but for
the team as well.”
DERBY COUNTY travel to Nottingham Forest
in the Carabao Cup, sponsored by Carabao
Energy Drink.
