The extreme weather also prompted
vets to warn dog owners about over-
exercising their pets in the heat. Experts
said flat-faced breeds like French bull-
dogs and pugs are particularly at risk.
But things will change today, with a
cold front moving in from the Atlantic
set to hit the west coast of the UK.
Thunder and lightning is expected by
tonight. By tomorrow, temperatures will
be around 20C, with a high of 22C in
London. Moving into next weekend, a

drowned while swimming in a river.
Emergency crews rushed
to the River Trent in
Nottingham yesterday.
Victoria Embankment was
closed to traffic while
underwater teams carried
out a search. His body was
found two hours later.
Sgt Pete Shaw, of Notting-
hamshire Police, said:
“Emergency services have
sadly recovered the body of
a man from the River Trent
today, despite the best
efforts of rescue teams and
members of the public who helped.
“I would like to highlight this case as
we go through the week, with the chance
of some thunder and showers across the
country from Tuesday.
“The south-east of
England will hold on to
the sun for an extra day,
and we could see temper-
atures in the low 30s.”

FLIGHT Jet2 pilot became ill
Emergency
landing after
pilot ‘fainted’
A FLIGHT from Manches-
ter to Portugal was forced
to make an emergency
landing yesterday after the
pilot became unwell.
The Jet2 plane was taken
over by the co-pilot and
another pilot from the
same airline, who was on
board going on holiday.
It was just over half way
through the four-hour
flight to Funchal, Madeira.
It is thought the pilot
fainted in the cockpit.
The 40-year-old was
taken to hospital on arrival
in Porto “as a precaution”.
Passenger Nick Banks
said the pilot was “wheeled
off in a wheelchair with an
oxygen mask”.
Jet2 said: “A standby
aircraft and replacement
crew were flown to Porto
so we could get customers
on their way to Funchal as
soon as possible.”

MARGARET Thatcher’s
spin doctor Tim Bell has
died after a long illness.
Lord Bell was behind the

They are credited with
sealing Thatcher’s general

The father of two went

His friend and business

called him “a pioneer in
political communication”.
Mr Pottinger added: “He
was a devoted family man.”
Lord Bell, who also

in 1983 and 1987, was
