Sport County Championship

Somerset electrify title battle

Somerset gave their hopes of
a maiden County
Championship title a huge
boost as they completed a
nerveless final-day chase to
beat Warwickshire by five
wickets at Edgbaston.
Needing 250 to win with
10 wickets in hand at the
start of day four, the visitors
chased down the target in
72.4 overs to secure 21 points
as they look to edge out
Essex and Yorkshire, who
both won this week.
Somerset’s chances
looked slim as Warwickshire
reduced them to 49 for
three, but Tom Banton made
66 and an 88-run stand
between George Bartlett and
Dom Bess sealed the win.

Somerset are now two
points adrift of Essex with
three games to play and they
face each other in the final
round at Taunton.
Yorkshire claimed the six
wickets they needed to keep
themselves in title
contention, beating
Nottinghamshire by 143
runs shortly after lunch on
day four at Scarborough.
Nottinghamshire, chasing an
unlikely 387, were bowled
out for 243 as South Africa
spinner Keshav Maharaj
claimed six for 95. Yorkshire
trail Essex by 37 points.
Hampshire strengthened
their grip on fourth with a
draw against Surrey at the
Oval.

Gloucestershire moved
up to second in Division Two
with a superb run chase to
beat Derbyshire by eight
wickets. Derbyshire
declared on 481 for six –
setting a target of 263 in 49
overs. James Bracey hit a
sensational unbeaten 116
from just 143 balls to lead
Gloucestershire to victory
with 11 balls to spare.
Mark Cosgrove salvaged a
draw for Leicestershire at
Durham. The Australian
began the day unbeaten on
21, with his team still 155
runs behind the home side,
but his first century of the
campaign saved his team
from defeat before bad light
ended the contest.

A commanding batting
performance by Rachel
Priest helped title hopefuls
Western Storm beat
defending champions Surrey
Stars by four runs in a
thrilling Kia Super League
clash at the Cooper Associ-
ates Ground.

Priest was top scorer,
hitting 44 runs, 26 of them
coming in one over off the
bowling of Mady Villiers,
which included three sixes
and two fours. Sophie Luff
and Deepti Sharma scored 32
apiece as Storm, who were
put in to bat, made 159 for
eight. Sarah Taylor led
Surrey’s response, with 73

runs off 54 balls, but they
only made 155 for eight with
off-spinner Sharma taking
three wickets for 18 runs.
Last night’s other clash
was also tense, Southern
Vipers edging out York-
shire Diamonds by three
runs. Yorkshire needed five
runs off the final three balls
to win, but just fell short.

Ruthless Priest keeps Storm on track

How Australia's openers have
fared in the first two Test
matches of this series and in the
previous two series in England

order, and so be better protected

from the new ball.

After their previous failed

campaigns in England, Australia

were braced for swing and seam,

even if they knew how this would

test them. Facing an Englishman of

Jofra Archer’s speed, and penchant

for clattering limbs and worse, is a

novel challenge. And while

Australia’s batsmen have ample

experience against 90mph bowling

in the nets, doing so in the
cauldron of an Ashes Test is a
challenge of an altogether different
order, especially given the lack of
cues in Archer’s action about when
a bouncer will follow.
“Obviously we copped some
short-pitched bowling, I think guys
prepared for it last week but it’s
another thing facing it,” Paine said.
“Guys have got plans in place and
we’ve prepared really well for it.
It’s about going out and executing
it. We think the Lord’s wicket was
quite a difficult one to face
short-pitched bowling on, so we’re
interested to see how this wicket
plays. But it’s about adapting to the
situation, the wicket and what any
of their bowlers are trying to do.
We’ve got to have a plan to counter
that and I know our boys will.”
“Character over cover drives” is
the mantra of Australia’s head
coach, Justin Langer, and one that
he leaned on once more when
assembling Australia’s Ashes
squad. That explained why
Bancroft was recalled to open at
the top of the order, why Matthew
Wade was picked as a specialist
batsman at No 6 and why
Labuschagne was selected to tour
after a middling start to his Test
career. Now, as they try to navigate
facing Archer and friends without
their finest player, Australia’s
batsmen will need to draw on all
those reserves of character in the
days ahead.
