In brief

Sturridge heads to Turkey
Former Liverpool striker Daniel
Sturridge has been signed by
Turkish side Trabzonspor on a
three-year contract. The 29-year-
old was a free agent after his
contract at Anfield expired in the
summer. Sturridge (right)
made 29 appearances for
Liverpool last season,
mostly as a
substitute, with the
last of those
coming late on in
the 4-0 Anfield
win over
Barcelona in the
second leg of the
Champions League
semi-final. The 26-cap
England international was
banned from football for
two weeks and
fined £75,000 in
July after
breaching the
Football
Association’s
betting
regulations.

Monaco sign Slimani
Leicester striker Islam Slimani has
moved to Monaco on loan for the
rest of the season. The
31-year-old, who became
Leicester’s record signing
when he arrived for a
reported £29 million from
Sporting Lisbon in summer
2016, scored just 13 times in
46 appearances
for the club. He
spent the second
half of the 2017-18
campaign on loan
at Newcastle, where he played four
times without scoring, before
another unproductive loan spell
last term at Turkish side
Fenerbahce.

Ribery joins Fiorentina
Franck Ribery has joined
Fiorentina on a two-year deal.
The 36-year-old winger, who has
been capped 81 times by France,
was a free agent after 12 seasons
with Bayern Munich, which
included a Champions League title
in 2013. His signing follows that of

German striker Kevin-Prince
Boateng, and marks another big
statement by the Serie A club, who
were bought by cable television
businessman Rocco Commisso in
June after narrowly avoiding
relegation last season.

Ineos takes over Nice
France’s competition authority has
cleared the takeover of the Ligue 1
club Nice by Ineos, the energy
group run by British billionaire Jim
Ratcliffe, who also owns the
cycling team formerly known as
Team Sky. Nice, coached by former
Arsenal and French World Cup
winner Patrick Vieira, have won
their first two matches of the new
season.

Palmer in loan move
Manchester United Women
midfielder Aimee Palmer has
joined Sheffield United on a
season-long loan. Palmer, 19, made
15 appearances for United last
season and United manager Casey
Stoney said the temporary move
will continue her development.

New boy Nketiah does not

need long to send Leeds top

By Richard Jolly at Elland Road

As one cult hero returned to Elland

Road, another was created. Pontus

Jansson may have lost his place in

the Leeds supporters’ affections

but Eddie Nketiah can be assured

he is a new fan favourite.

Jansson’s comeback was pro-

ceeding swimmingly until Nketi-

ah’s introduction off the bench.

Four minutes later, the Arsenal loa-

nee had marked his league debut

with the goal to delight the watch-

ing Ian Wright, send Leeds top and

to mean the chants of his name,

which began even before he came

on, became louder and incessant.

Nketiah and a raucous crowd fed

off each other and Leeds manager

Marcelo Bielsa said: “When the fans

are supporting a player, it can stim-

ulate and have an influence.”

The three greatest influences last

night all began in Leeds’ technical

area. Nketiah and Helder Costa

were substitutes introduced by

Bielsa, whose trademark upturned

bucket is now sponsored by a scaf-

folding company.

They lacked strength in depth in

attack last season but borrowing

Costa and Nketiah has brought re-

serves of quality and the two pacy

players were quick to combine.

Costa sped clear and centred to give

Nketiah a tap-in. Having scored a

similar goal, again from a Costa

cross, on his Carabao Cup debut

against Salford last week, he had

repeated the feat on his introduc-

tion to the Championship.

By Ian Winrow at Craven Cottage

Scott Parker’s Fulham side demon-
strated why they are fancied to
make an immediate return to the
Premier League with a comprehen-
sive defeat of a Millwall team who
arrived at Craven Cottage unbeaten
in their opening four games.
Ivan Cavaleiro, signed from Wol-
verhampton Wanderers, followed
up his outstanding effort in last Fri-
day’s victory at Huddersfield Town
with two more fine finishes, start-
ing and finishing the scoring.
In between, Anthony Knockaert
headed his first goal for the club to
establish a two-goal half-time lead
and Aleksandar Mitrovic struck
from the penalty spot early in the
second half.

“Only sometimes can this hap-
pen,” added Bielsa, deflecting sug-
gestions it was an inspired
substitution. Yet Leeds required in-
spiration. Patrick Bamford had
spurned their best chance before
Nketiah’s arrival when he glanced
Ezgjan Alioski’s cross wide.
Otherwise, with Pablo Hernan-
dez unusually poor, Leeds were
muted in the final third. They had
70 per cent of possession but Bielsa
said: “We dominated the game but
we didn’t create a lot of chances.”
Brentford struck the post, with a
long-range strike from summer
signing Bryan Mbeumo, and kept
Leeds at bay. Manager Thomas
Frank said: “That was more or less a
top defensive performance.” Jans-
son was at the heart of it, exiled to
Brentford by Bielsa in a £5.5 million

move and perhaps too much of an
individual for the Leeds manager’s
liking but made captain by Frank.
Jansson went unmentioned in
the programme but was hugged by
Hernandez, Alioski and Kalvin Phil-
lips before kick-off and then went
on to excel. “He showed what we
needed,” the Brentford manager
added. “One of our weaker spots
was the defensive side and he has
improved that massively.” But not
enough to halt Leeds’ impact sub-
stitute, Nketiah.

Cavaleiro inspires Fulham

Fulham’s dominance was such
that they enjoyed 84.5 per cent pos-
session. “The most pleasing thing is
that all the work you’ve put in over
the last 10 weeks, you see your team
executing against a good Millwall
side,” Parker said.
Acknowledging the contribution
of Cavaleiro, Knockaert and his
other summer recruits, Parker
added: “That’s credit to the owner,
who identified the mistakes we
made last year in terms of recruit-
ment, and ticked boxes this year.”
Neil Harris, the Millwall man-
ager, admitted his side were well
beaten. “That’s the best perfor-
mance I’ve seen since Wolves got
100 points,” he said. “I won’t judge
my players against a top side.”

Fulham (4-3-3) Bettinelli; Sessegnon, Mawson, Ream,
Bryan; Cairney (Decordova-Reid 69), Arter (McDonald

Swansea surge continues

ROUND-UP

Swansea maintained their
excellent start under new manager
Steve Cooper with a 3-1 victory at
Queens Park Rangers.
Borja Baston’s 70th-minute
penalty put them back in front
soon after Jordan Hugill’s equaliser
and Sam Surridge rubber-stamped
the victory by nodding in Andre
Ayew’s cross from close range 10
minutes later. The win leaves
Swansea level on points with table
toppers Leeds, who have a slightly
better goal difference.
Albert Adomah denied
promoted Charlton a third league
victory of the campaign as
Nottingham Forest struck late to
snatch a 1-1 draw at The Valley.
Lyle Taylor’s 18th-minute header
looked like being enough to claim

the points until substitute Adomah
levelled 12 minutes from time.
Ovie Ejaria put Reading ahead
at West Brom only to concede the
penalty that allowed the hosts to
equalise through Kenneth Zohore.
Substitute Junior Hoilett further
dented managerless Hudders-
field’s hopes of an immediate
return to the Premier League as
Cardiff left it late in South Wales.
Joe Ralls opened the scoring three
minutes before half-time only for
the visitors’ Trevoh Chalobah to
level within five minutes of the
restart. But Hoilett came off the
bench to snatch a 2-1 victory with
an 88th-minute winner.
Stoke remain bottom of the table
after a comprehensive 3-1 defeat at
Preston, Daniel Johnson, Billy
Bodin and Josh Harrop scoring for
the home side.
