Doolittle, Elias take positive steps
The Washington Nationals’ bullpen is down to one
left-hander, Matt Grace, but could soon get two
lefties back from the injured list.
Sean Doolittle and Roenis Elías each threw a
simulated inning at Nationals Park on Wednesday.
They both threw 16 pitches off the mound to
outfielder Gerardo Parra and catcher Spencer
Kieboom and, according to Manager Dave
Martinez, came out of it feeling good. But his
assessments of the two pitchers varied in tone
before the Nationals’ 8-4 win over the Baltimore
Orioles, and Doolittle later complemented that
with mixed feelings of his own.
Martinez raved about Elías’s progress and hinted
that the trade-deadline acquisition could be back
as soon as Friday. He was a bit more measured with
Doolittle, the team’s struggling closer, and repeated
that the Nationals will see how Doolittle feels
Thursday. Doolittle said Wednesday night that
while he felt good physically and his knee came out
pain-free, his mechanics and pitches still need
more work. Doolittle expects to make a rehab
appearance with Class A Potomac in Frederick on
Friday.
“I felt good physically, and that was
encouraging,” Doolittle said. “But not good enough
where I want my next appearance to be up here.”
Doolittle is sidelined with right knee tendinitis,
but he also hit the IL on Aug. 18 because his arm is
tired from a heavy workload. Elías is out with a
right hamstring strain after injuring it in his first
game with Washington on Aug. 2. If the Nationals
wait until Sunday, they could activate either
pitcher without having to make a corresponding
move.
