WELCOME to your September issue, an edition that contains a special section in tribute to the ight for the bridges
around Arnhem, as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the battle. As you’ll read, Montgomery’s plan to shorten
the war by crossing the Rhine and sweeping into Germany in September 1944 was far from successful, but that shouldn’t
detract from the bravery of those who fought there, against almost impossible odds. Richard Doherty quotes President
Eisenhower in his feature starting on page 42, saying “they never linched, never wavered. They held steadfastly”. I’m
very honoured that we can tell their stories.
Talking of war heroes, we’re sad to report on the passing of Battle of Britain Hurricane pilot Flight Lieutenant Archie
McInnes, who died recently, just hours after celebrating his 100th birthday. (See News page 7.) It’s thought that just ive of
The Few are still with us, as the 80th anniversary of the British Commonwealth and Empire’s inest hour approaches.
While we remember the valour of those who served in World War Two, let’s not forget that a new generation of military personnel is risking
all in the name of freedom. Lord Ashcroft details the life of one such gentleman, Lance Corporal Christopher Finney GC, on pages 102-105. L/Cpl
Finney’s armoured car came under attack in Iraq in 2003 – he managed to get out of the burning vehicle, but saw a comrade was stuck inside. He
dashed back into the lames to rescue his friend, sustaining injures in the process. Chris then noticed another member of his unit was trapped in
a second armoured car and went back to help. L/Cpl Finney received the George Cross for his actions, and rightly so. I’m sure as more details of
recent military campaigns emerge, we’ll hear other accounts of great courage, as the brave spirit of our ighting forces lives on.
