yearsold. Bornand raisedinLynn,he
attended BostonUniversitywhere he
receivedaBachelor’sdegree,aMaster’s
degree, andaLawdegree.He also
received aMasterofDivinityDegree
and an honorary doctoral degree from
the VirginiaTheologicalSeminary. He
received innumerable other recogni-
tions, awards, andcommendations.
In 1969,asanunknown minister,
he toppledthe incumbentmayorof
Somerville in an upsetpolitical victory.
He was amuch neededreformerinan
ageoframpant corruption.In1971, he
openedCityHall to reporters fromThe
Boston Globe, whoexposeddeep-rooted
municipalcorruption in thefirstever
Globe Spotlight Series.Thisserieswent
on to winaPulitzerPrize.
Ralphtransformed Somerville.
From 1970-1978he served four terms
as Mayor. In 1972, underhis leader-
ship, Somerville was awardedtheAll
AmericaCityAward.Whilemayor,
Ralph revitalizedthe city, building
multiple schoolsand firestations,
transforming public parks,and renovat-
ing libraries.Hewas at theforefront
of expanding and improving public
transportation andplayed an important
roleinbringingtheDavis Square area
to lifewhen he helpedtobring the Red
Line to the city.
In addition to serving as Mayor,
Ralph was the rector of Christ Church
in Somervillefor many years.Heserved
as MiddlesexCountyCommissioner.
Afterretiringfrompolitics, he main-
tained asuccessful privatelaw practice.
He touched and improved the lives of
countlesspeople.
Ralphissurvived by his wife of
55years, JoyceP.Ralph of Reading;
daughter Sarah Ralph and her husband

teachinginHawaii. Sister’schosenform
of dressing onceshe returned stateside
always included aflower tucked behind
her ear.
Sister Mary carried throughher be-
lief in education by donating her body
forscience. Shewrote thatshe had
had alonglife becauseof“advancesin
medical science. Ifeelthatbydonating
my body to UMassMedical School,
young doctorswillbebeneficiariesand
better abletocare for others.”
