Of Alexandria, Virginia died on August 27,
2019 at the age of 92. He was born in
1926 to Marie Gasson and Albert Vickers
Bryan. He graduated from GeorgeWash-
ington High School in Alexandria, Virginia
and then attended Virginia Military Institute
before leaving to serve in the US Marine
Corps Reserve from 1944-1946. Upon his
discharge he attended GeorgeWashington
University for one year and then the Univer-
sity of Virginia Law School, graduating in

1962 when he was appointedaVirginia
State Circuit Judge.In1971 he was appoint-
edaUSDistrict Judge for the Eastern
District of Virginia. He took Senior Status
in 1991. He was preceded in death by

Albert Vickers Bryan, III. He is survived by
abrother,Dr. Henry Gasson Bryan, by two

where he and Carolyn met. He graduated from
Catholic University in 1956 and from its School
of Law in 1959.
Edward specialized in the practice of commu-
nications law and was active in the affairs of
theFederal Communications Bar Association,
having been elected its President in 1983. He
was affiliated with various law firms through-
out his career,includingalengthy term as a
senior partner with the firm Bryan Cave.
He retired from the US Army Reserves in 1992
with therank of Major.Heretired from active
law practice in 2007. He retired his exceptional
wit on August 28, 2019.

Ryan is survived by his parents; grandmother
SarahPaysinger;and aunt EllenTappero.
Ryan’sinterment will be in Greenlawn Memori-
alPark, Columbia, SC.

ANNE FRANCIS WOOD SWEENEY
Of Aroda, Virginia passed away suddenly on
Sunday,August 25, 2019 inFairfax,VAafter
celebrating her 86th birthday.She was born on
August 22, 1933 to the late Edward OteyWood
and Helen Lowry Haden.
Anne was born andraised in Charlottesville,
VAand traveled the United States and through-
out Central and South America as the wife
of an AirForce officer.Anne wasadevoted
wife,mother and grandmother andawarm,
witty and generous person. She spent her final
years wintering in Ft. Myers,Florida and the
remainder of the year onafarm in Madison
County not far from where she was born.
Anne wasapassionate Redskins and Nationals
fan, an avid reader,both of fiction and the
Washington Post cover to cover,andawoman
of strong opinions and convictions,tempered
by her unfailing southern manners.She was a
talented cook and baker and the secret of her
carrot cake frosting has unfortunately passed
with her.
She is survived by her husband,JamesKelly
Sweeney of Aroda; two daughters,Kelly and
Randy Hite of Burke,VAandTracy Sweeney
Banks of Kitty Hawk, NC; grandchildren,Jason
andValerie Hite,Eric and Nadine Hite,Madison
Hite,Jackson Hite,Austin Banks andParker
Banks and great-grandchildren, Olivia and Sal-
lie Hite.
Afuneral service will be held at Our Lady of the
Blue Ridge Catholic Church in Madison,VA
on Saturday,August 31, 2019 at 12 noon.
Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will
be held atalater date.
In lieu of flowers,contributions may be made
to Catholic Charities,www.centerforadoption-
services.org.
