Kieboom sent back
to Harrisburg for now

The Washington Nationals
optioned c atcher Spencer
Kieboom back to Class AA
Harrisburg on Thursday
morning. The team did not
announce a corresponding m ove,
but r eliever Hunter Strickland —
who went o n the p aternity list
Tuesday after t he birth of his
second daughter, Brylee Drew —
could return to the t eam Friday
for t he start of a three-game series
with the Miami Marlins.
Kieboom, who served as the
team’s b ackup catcher in the
second half of last season, did not
play in his two days with the team.
Yan Gomes caught Patrick Corbin
on Tuesday, a nd Kurt S uzuki
handled Max Scherzer o n
Wednesday.
The decision to replace
Strickland w ith Kieboom made
sense on i ts f ace. Manager Dave
Martinez likes to use his catchers
to pinch-hit — Suzuki
demonstrated w hy w ith a double,
homer a nd f our RBI on
Wednesday — and Kieboom’s
presence g ave him t he ability to
do that. The Nationals h ave
engineered the 2 8-year-old’s
season around his availability t o

the b ig league club, stashing him
in Harrisburg rather t han across
the c ountry at C lass A AA Fresno
in case they need him on short
notice as well as scaling back his
starts to keep him healthy.
One side e ffect of h is early
promotion: Rosters expand to 40
on Sunday, b ut Kieboom w ill h ave
to wait a minimum o f 10 d ays to
return to the m ajors. The only
other catcher o n the 4 0-man
roster is Raudy Read, a 25-year-
old w ith an .850 o n-base-plus-
slugging percentage a t Fresno.
The Grizzlies’ season ends
Monday, t hough the Nationals
will need to plan ahead if t hey

want Read available as early as
Sunday. T he team has learned
this season that calling up a
player f rom Fresno a nd e xpecting
him t o be available the same n ight
is not feasible.
The team probably announced
the K ieboom m ove on Thursday’s
day off instead o f a more typical
pregame announcement Friday to
start the clock o n his return as
early a s possible. He c an now
rejoin t he Nationals on Sept. 7,
which i s a Saturday and the third
of four g ames against the
National League East-leading
Braves in Atlanta.
