married!
Love, Suzy x
No, it wasn’t bad. It was terrible. Suzy
groaned again. If there’d been a hole in
the floor to swallow her up she’d have
jumped in head first.
W
HY don’t you go and
find him?” Jess sug-
gested when Suzy
finally came clean.
“Just tell him it was
a practical joke and
apologise. I’m sure he’ll see the funny
side. Even you’ll be able to see the funny
side in a day or two.”
Suzy snorted. “There isn’t a funny side
to see. I’m going to have to leave and find
another job.”
“But you love working here. You said
so yourself.”
“Only because I get to see Aaron every
day and I’ve blown that now – I’ll never
be able to look at him again.”
“Well you might have to – he’s just
walked back in and he’s coming this way.”
Suzy’s face flooded with fresh colour
and she ducked back down behind her
computer screen. “I’m not here,” she
hissed. “If anyone asks I’m on an early
lunch, buying a card for mygrandma.”
And with that she slunk out
of the office, her face still
burning, and made a dash
for the back door.
All the way down the street
she toyed with the idea of
sneaking off home and nev-
er coming back. In fact, why
stop there? Perhaps she
should move to a new city
while she was at it – there’d be no
chance of bumping into Aaron then.
She brushed away a tear – what was it
about him that reduced her to such a
quivering wreck? She really needed to
get a grip – sobbing in the middle of
Carmen’s Cards wasn’t going to help.
S
HE stared for ages at the gar-
ish “grandmother” selection
before picking one at ran-
dom, a pink flowery Get
Well Soon monstrosity with
big gold letters and a sicklypoem inside. She bought some stamps
and sat down on the wall outside to write
a quick message.
“Jess said I’d find you here,” came a
voice behind her. Suzy swung round.
Thanks for nothing, Jess, she thought.
This was all her fault. “I had to get a... it’s
for my gran.. .”
Aaron was looking at her, smiling. “Did
you get my email?” he asked.
“No.” Suzy was confused for a moment- wasn’t that her line? “Oh, of course, the
test one, you mean. I’ll check when I get
back to the office. Please tell me you
didn’t get mine.”
“Okay, I didn’t get yours,” he said oblig-
ingly. “Why, what did it say?”
“Nothing. Nothing at all. Another test
one, that’s all. Best to ignore it. Delete it.”
“Right, I see,” he said, still smiling.
“Well in that case you’d better ignore
mine too.”
“I have to go,” said Suzy. “Things to do.”
She waved the envelope in the air by way
of an explanation and rushed off down
the hill towards the postbox before he
had a chance to reply. Maybe it would all
blow over, she told herself – perhaps he
really would delete her message and no
one would ever be any the wiser.
Back at the office she checked her
emails again. Her heart sank as she saw
Aaron’s message waiting for her: “Re:
Fancy a Drink?” So, he’d seen it after all.
Dear Suzy,
A drink sounds good – when were you
thinking? Please feel free to gaze lovingly
into my eyes and try to get
me drunk – but perhaps we
could leave the wedding ’til
next week? Let me know
when you’re free.
Aaron
What? Suzy read the mes-
sage through a second time.
“He wants to go for a drink,”
she said out loud, still trying
totakeit in.“Hewantstogofora drink
withme!”
“So you’re not leaving anymore?” asked
Jess.
Suzy’s face broke into a grin as she
reached into her drawer for her spare
cherry lip gloss.
“Maybe I’ll stick it out a bit longer after
all,” she said. “At least until Aaron sorts
me out with some one-on-one training
for the new online calendar system. Fin-
gers crossed there’ll be lots of dates to
put in!” S
