one of the
foundation sires
of Russia’s Tersk
Stud.
RIGHT: Korej 1939
(Kann x Rixalina)
sired over 200
foals and
established the
Latif sire line at
Tersk.
The line divides into two distinct
branches through two Denouste
sons, both foaled in 1927. One of
these was Kann (out of Kita), who
was sold in 1930 to the Russian
state stud Tersk. It was already
obvious at the time that if you
wanted Arabian racing blood, you
needed French horses;
accordingly, both Russia and
Poland imported Arabians from
France to improve performance
at the racetrack. With some
success; and where Russia is
concerned, Kann certainly proved
an asset. He sired 45 foals,
including a son to carry on the line
in Russia: Korej, foaled in 1939 out
of the Crabbet mare Rixalina.
Korej himself only raced twice, but
in these two races he placed first
and second. He sired over 200
foals, of which six sons and 15
daughters were used for
breeding. Three of his sons
established their own successful
branches.
The first was Kankan, foaled in
1954 out of Nagrada I; a small,
but athletic stallion who placed
six times among the first three in
10 races. He was used as a sire at
Tersk from 1959 to 1971. One of
his most famous sons was Persik
1969 (x Pamiatka), who was sold
to France in 1973 and became
the most celebrated sire of
endurance horses of all time. In

Kankan 1954 (Korej x Nagrada) was a good
racehorse and stood at stud at Tersk from
1959 to 1971.
24 years he sired over 300 foals,
including numerous sons that
were also used for breeding. His
name appears in the pedigrees of
many successful endurance
horses today, both purebred and
partbred. His sire line, however, is
almost exclusively limited to
France, though two sons were
sold to Brazil and one to Spain.
The branch of Kankan’s 1970
son Prizrak (x Ptashka) is both
more international and more
versatile, despite the fact that
Prizrak was used at Tersk only one
season, when he was already 14
years old. Through Delfin 1985 (x
Nasturcia) and Delfin’s son
Grenlando there is a small branch
Persik 1969 (Kankan x Pamiatka) sired over 300 foals in 24 years
and became one of the most celebrated endurance sires of all time.
