successful endurance horses as
well. Prizrak was later used at the
Tervete Stud in Latvia. His son
Panduss 1991 (x Dallasa), bred
there, was exported to Italy,
where he became a top sire of
endurance horses.
Prizrak’s most famous son was
Drug 1985 (x Karinka), a brilliant
illustration of the fact that beauty
and performance can, indeed,
come in one package. Like Drakon,
he was at the track for five years.
In 35 races, he won 13 times,
placed second nine times, and
third four times. He won the
Russian Derby in 1989 and just
one year later, still in athletic
condition, was named European
Champion Stallion! This unique
achievement would hardly be

possible today, when the breed is
increasingly being divided into
specialist groups, with show
horses on the one side and
performance horses on the other.
Drug was both, and with his
beautiful head also proved that a
15.3 hh Arabian does not have to
be plain. Of his sons, Padishah,
Period, Navodchik, and Nadeshnij
came to Germany, and Morjak
and Adres to Britain. Period 1994
(x Progulka) was one of the most
successful Arabian dressage
horses of all time, performing up
to Grand Prix level, but shares the
fate of many successful sports
stallions in that he has not been
used much at stud. Nadeshnij
1993 (x Nadesha) has sired
successful endurance horses and
several breeding sons, including
one Anglo-Arabian. Sadly, both
Navodchik and Adres died early,
and Navodchik’s only son has
recently been gelded; the fate of
all too many fine stallions that are
not of fashionable bloodlines and
are not being used. Drug himself,
after having been a chief sire at
Tersk for several years, was sold to
Abu Dhabi, where he lived to the
grand old age of 31. His successor
at Tersk is his son Madiar 1994 (x
Martinika), who is very much his
father’s son: a highly successful
racehorse with 30 starts, 15 wins
and 10 second places, Derby
winner in 1998 and Russian
National Champion Stallion in
