hrough his remarkable career, Gazwan
(Amer x Arc de Ciel by Djendel) has been
more a horse of the world than a runner
who has specialized in peak
performances in any single country.
Now an eight-year-old, Gazwan won important
stakes in England, France, and Qatar from 2015
through 2018. This year, Gazwan won the Group 3
Amir Sword Trial in Qatar in early February, but was
beaten in Group 1 races later in February and April
in his final two starts of the winter-spring
Qatar season.
A trip to England in mid-summer put Gazwan
back at the fore of Arabian racing. In the Group 1
Shadwell Dubai International Stakes at Newbury
Racecourse on July 28, Gazwan prevailed in the
richest race of the Dubai International Arabian
Races program, which was witnessed by 7,400 fans.
“He’s a superstar,” said trainer Julian Smart.
“What more can I say about him? He’s run with the
best. He’s beaten the best. He’s eight years old, and
he’s still going.”
The July 28 program was a milestone day for
Smart and Gazwan’s owner – Sheikh Mohammed
bin Khalifa Al Thani. Earlier on the day, they won the
GAZWAN (Amer x Arc de Ciel by Djendel) won the $70,700
Group 1 Shadwell Dubai International Stakes at Newbury
Racetrack on July 28 at Newbury for owner HH Sheikh
Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani. Gazwan is trained by Julian
Smart and was ridden to the win by Olivier Peslier.
