Arabian Horse World – August 2019

(sharon) #1

“He’s not a horse that needs a lot of racing,”
Smart said. “He’s going to have a bit of downtime
now and then we’ll see.”
Bayan (Munjiz x Mowafaka by Tidjani) won her
third consecutive race, and first at the Group 1 level,
in the $42,700 Hatta International Stakes. Trained
by Frederic Sanchez for Sheikh Mansoor’s Yas Horse
Racing of Abu Dhabi, Bayan was a winner at 2,000
meters in Rome in April and won the Group 2 Prix de
L’Elevage at Toulouse, France, on June 1.
The Hatta International Stakes was Bayan’s
second start in a Group 1. She was second in the
$112,000 Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches for
three-year-old fillies at Saint-Cloud Racecourse in
Paris last October.
In the Hatta International Stakes, Bayan was
ridden by her regular rider, Ioritz Mendizabal. The
race drew seven and Bayan went to the front
shortly after the start. She was urged in the final
quarter-mile and did not always race on a true line,
but prevailed by 1 ¼ lengths over R’Ezala (Nizam x
Cherazade by Dormane).
Bayan has won three of seven starts, and she
thrives in longer distances, with the wins at 1 ¼ miles.
“We always knew that she was special,” Thierry
Delegue, racing manager for Yas Horse Racing, told
the press. “She proved it and we can now look
forward to very exciting times. She’s only four years
old, and we believe she will be even better at five
and over.”
The disappointment in the field was Al Shamoos
(No Risk Al Maury x Hamiya by Al Hasim), who won
two major races last fall – the Group 1 Qatar
Arabian Trophy des Juments at Longchamp in
October, the world’s leading race for four-year-old
fillies; and the $1,362,397 Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan
Al Nahyan Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi in November.
The Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown is the world’s richest
Arabian race.
Al Shamoos was in contention to the final furlong
before she faded to finish about four lengths
behind Bayan.
Conchita D.A. (AF Albahar x Schiva D.A. by Amer)
was the surprise winner of the major races run at
Newbury. Owned and trained by Peter Deckers,
Conchita D.A. had primarily raced in Belgium and
had her first start in England in the $42,700
Za’abeel International Stakes at 1,200 meters, or
six furlongs.
Dismissed at odds of 16-1 in a field of nine,
Conchita D.A. won the most important race of her
career in a convincing manner. Ridden by Anna Van
Den Troost, Conchita D.A. took control of the race
from Mith’haf Athbah in the final furlong and pulled
away to win by 2 ½ lengths over Macallan (Dahess x
Queen Anne by Riyal).
CONCHITA D.A. (AF
Albahar x Schiva D.A. by
Amer) won the $42,700
Group 1 Jebel Ali
Racecourse Za’abeel
International Stakes on
July 28 at Newbury for
owner/trainer Peter
Deckers. Conchita D.A.
was ridden by Anna Van
Den Troost.
