Arabian Horse World – August 2019

(sharon) #1

ne-by-one, they flashed under the finish
line at Chantilly Racecourse in France on
the afternoon of June 16, a trio of
four-year-old Arabians whose riders
were dressed in remarkably similar fashion.
Hayyan finished first in the Group 1 Qatar Derby,
a race formally known as the Qatar Derby Des
Pur-Sang Arabe De 4 Ans, and gave owner Sheikh
Mansoor’s Yas Horse Racing Management a sweep
of the first three positions in the $169,500 race.
About the only thing that differentiated winning
rider Ioritz Mendizabal on Hayyan was a red cap
compared to a red and green checked cap worn by
jockey François Xavier-Bertran on runner-up Deryan.
Hayyan beat Deryan by a half-length with
stablemate Kanaan in third-place, 3 ½ lengths
behind Deryan. Pierre Charles-Boudot, who rode
Kanaan, was dressed like his counterparts in Yas
Racing’s red and green checked silks, although he
sported a white cap to give race watchers a chance
to tell the riders apart.
HAYYAN (Munjiz x Dahwa by Tidjani), right, won the $169,500
Qatar Derby for four-year-olds on June 16 at Chantilly Racecourse
in France. He is owned by Sheikh Mansoor's Yas Horse
Management, trained by Frederick Sanchez and was ridden by
Ioritz Mendizabal.
