LAURA COLLETT, 29

HORSE: London 52, 10
BREEDING: Landos x Quinar
OWNERS: Keith Scott, Karen Bartlett and rider
GROOM: Zanie King
BEST RESULTS: first Blenheim young
horse CCI4*-S 2018; first Chatsworth ERM
CCI4*-S 2019.
FORM: a young horse who had an impeccable
rise through the levels until Bramham this
year, when problems across country followed
a sub-par dressage. They bounced back at
Aachen, where only a late run-out prevented a
prestigious win. Outstanding in the first phase.

GREAT BRITAIN

TINA COOK, 48

HORSE: Billy The Red, 12
BREEDING: Balou Du Rouet x Stan The Man xx
OWNERS: Elisabeth Murdoch and Keith Tyson
GROOM: Rachel Tolley
BEST RESULTS: fourth and team gold
medallists European Championships 2017; ninth
WEG 2018; seventh Badminton 2019.
FORM: this pair have overcome a dressage blip
last year, which led to them being individuals
rather than team members at WEG, and have
an impressive record at the top level. Assuming
Tina’s recent fall at Hartpury hasn’t dented
confidence, they should be top-10 finishers.

PIGGY FRENCH, 39

HORSE: Quarrycrest Echo, 12
BREEDING: Clover Echo x Cavalier Royale
OWNERS: Jayne McGivern
GROOM: Amy Phillips
BEST RESULTS: first Chatsworth ERM CCI4*-S
2018; 10th and team gold WEG 2018; fourth
Kentucky CCI5* 2019.
FORM: this pair excelled at WEG last year. Their
cross-country at Kentucky this spring was not
the smoothest, but they have since had a sixth
at Aachen and a win at Hartpury, so Badminton
heroine Piggy looks set for further success.
RESERVE HORSE: Trevor Dickens’ Vanir Kamira

TOM MCEWEN, 28

HORSE: Toledo De Kerser, 12
BREEDING: Diamant De Semilly x Papillon Rouge
OWNERS: Fred and Penny Barker, Jane Inns and
rider’s mother Ali
GROOM: Lucy Seddon
BEST RESULTS: fourth Burghley CCI5* 2017;
seventh Badminton CCI5* 2018; 12th and team
gold WEG 2018.
FORM: after contributing to WEG team gold, this
pair were unlucky to miss out on a top result at
Badminton when they broke a frangible device
across country. But their improved dressage
there is exciting; let’s hope they can repeat it.

KITTY KING, 37

HORSE: Vendredi Biats, 10
BREEDING: Winningmood Van De Arenberg x
Camelia De Ruelles
OWNERS: Diana Bown, Sally Lloyd Baker, Sally
Eyre and Samantha Wilson
GROOM: Chloe Fry
BEST RESULTS: first Bramham CCI4*-L 2019;
first Burgham CCI4*-S 2019.
FORM: a talented horse who can also be
unfocused, Vendredi Biats tipped Kitty off at his
first Badminton this year, but has won since at
Bramham and Burgham. If he goes clear across
country, he should be competitive.

OLIVER TOWNEND, 36

HORSE: Cooley Master Class, 14
BREEDING: Ramiro B x Master Imp
OWNER: Angela Hislop
GROOMS: Suzanne Cooper and
Charlotte Hollyfield
BEST RESULTS: first Kentucky CCI5* 2018
and 2019.
FORM: as well as consecutive Kentucky wins,
this horse has had competitive results elsewhere
at CCI4*-S. His record is good in all phases and
the pair should deliver a strong score.
RESERVE HORSE: Karyn Shuter, Angela Hislop
and Val Ryan’s Ballaghmor Class

All results in this preview have been converted to new 2019 star levels.
