37‘HE JUST BRIGHTENS YOUR DAY’
KATY LAWRENCE won the special owner/rider BE100 section for
the Ian White Memorial Trophy at Smiths Lawn by more than six
marks, finishing on her dressage mark of 24 with Whitemoors First
Flight. It was their third BE100 win of the season.
“He’s been a really fun horse ever since I bought him from an
advert in H&H last year,” said Katy. “You can be in the worst mood
ever and then get on him and he just brightens your day.”
The six-year-old son of Sir Shutterfly has grown from 16.2hh to
17hh since Katy bought him, and she said that she wants to give
him time to mature more before progressing through the levels.
“He’s slowly but surely learning he should listen to me, and
I want to make sure he grows in confidence,” said
Gatwick-based Katy, who hopes to qualify him for
Badminton’s grassroots championship next year.
“It was a nice course at Smiths Lawn and the
ground was just gorgeous.”ONE TO

SAMANTHA BROWN took BE100open section P at Homme House
on an impressive score of 19.3, having just added 0.8 of a cross-
country time-fault to her dressage mark on Westwood Appeal.
“Judges like him — he has a lot of presence and moves well —
but I hadn’t expected quite as good a mark as that,” said Samantha.
“Working for dressage rider Kate Cowell has definitely helped!”
Six-year-old Westwood Appeal was bred by his owner, Ruth
Lee, by Crown Amazonite VII out of a mare called Primitive Appeal,
whom Samantha also competed. She is currently starting a half-
brother to Westwood Appeal.
“‘Markus’ was actually born at my yard as we thought the mare
was still a month away from foaling, and she was sent down to
me for some grass,” said Samanatha, who has done everything
with him. “He can be a bit shy at first, but he loves people and his
personality has grown since winning his last couple of events.”
Samantha’s mother runs the showjumping at
Homme House and Samantha lives half an hour away.
“We always try to support it because it’s a lovely
event, and rain a couple of days beforehand really took
the sting out of the ground,” she reported.I OWE IT
