recognition.Manypeopleare
stillbuyinghorsesbredin
Europe,buttherearesomany
goodhorsesbredhere,and
theymustbebetterpromoted.
It’sbeenshowntimeand
againthatforeignjudgesdo
appreciatethem,sowhydoso
manyridersfavourDutchand
Germanhorses,forexample?
Weheraldourgoodhorses
thathavecomefromabroad,
butwedon’treceivethe
reciprocaltreatmentinother
Europeancountries.Wemust
allworkhardertochangethis.
Breedersandbreeding
shouldbegivenmuchmore
recognition,beinglisted
ondatabasesandinshow
programmes.Itcanoften
bedifficulttofindouthow
horsesarebred.Itwasa good
moveofBritishDressage(BD)
toincludebreedingdetails
ofregisteredhorsesonits
website—I hadbeenpushing
forthistohappensinceI was
BDchairmansixyearsago.
Mostinternationalshows
nowlisthorses’breeding
ontheirstartlists,butthis
shouldbethecaseatnational
showsaswell.Itwouldbe
evenbetterif thebreeder
waslisted,thenanybody
interestedina similarhorse
couldcontactthem.A lotof
breedersaren’tverygoodat
promotingthemselves,andas
a resultcanbeoverlooked.
Italsodoesn’thelpwhen
Britishbreedersregister
theirhorseswithforeign
studbooks,insteadofa British
one.I canseewhytheydo—it
makes horses easier to sell,

butit’sa missedopportunity
topromoteBritishbreeding.
Withoutthekudosand
promotiontheydeserve,
horsesregisteredwithBritish
studbooksremainless
desirableinEurope.
Wetakeplentyofwell-
bredforeignhorsestoputinto
oursalesoverhere,butwhere
aretheBritishhorsesbeing
soldinEurope?It’snota fair
playingfield,butwehaveto
bebraveenoughtostandup
andfightforBritishbreeding.

MIXINGDISCIPLINES
MANYmorepeopleseemto
beusingcross-disciplinesires
andmares—forinstance,
severaldressagehorsesseem
tohavethethoroughbred
stallionHeraldikinthem,who
wasprimarilyaneventsire.
AndourstallionTimolin
is byTotilas,butcompetes
successfullyineventingas
wellasdressage.
I watchedIsabellWerth
winwithBellaRose2 at
CHIOAachen,andnoted
that,althoughthemareis by
thedressagesireBelissimo
M,herdamsireis theAnglo
ArabstallionCacir,whichis
certainlynottypicaldressage
breeding.Butthere’sno
reasonwhyAngloArabs
can’tdodressageif theycan
producethepowerrequired
forthemoderndressage
horse.Thisis certainlyshown
intheeleganceofthislovely
mareandherabilitytopiaffe
andpassageina wonderful
rhythm—sheis elegance
