shapes and sizes. He’s not a fast
horse and it’s nicer to jump two
good clears on him to win. We got
it right and gave him a day off on

LARKSONG CRUISES
TO A WIN
NEWLY crowned international
stairway league winner for the
fourth consecutive year, Helen
Tredwell maintained her form on
the county circuit with victory in
the Wales Environment Ltd area
trial on her home-bred Larksong.
A seemingly innocuous double
caught out several, and just three
combinations posted initial clears.

Theywerejoinedbythefastest
four-faulters to make five for the
jump-off.
Carrying four faults from
round one, Mark Edwards risked
an inside turn to the last to set a
target to beat on Montreuxs Tale,
but Adrian made no mistake to
provide the first double clear on
Millfield Baloney. His lead was
short-lived as Helen cruised into
the top spot on the Vangelis S
14-year-old Larksong to secure
the top spot by 1.61sec.
“The going was perfect and
she really enjoyed herself — she
switches easily from all-weather
surfaces to grass,” said Helen.
Helen also featured in the
Speedi-Beet grade C qualifier,
taking third with Colin and Ann
Garratt’s Hannelina.
Mark came to the fore in this
seven-horse jump-off, guiding
the home-bred Flying Tinker II,
by top horse Tinkers Tale and out
of former ride Perpetual Motion,
into the top spot by 0.81sec.
“He’s just like his mother and
the most careful horse I’ve sat on
since. He’s come on so much in
the last three months that he’s a
different horse; now, the bigger it
is the better he jumps,” said Mark,
who sold the eight-year-old to Roy
and Marlene Edwards a month
ago and kept the ride.
Angie Thompson guided Flint
K into second, a Zapetero VDL x
Gentleman nine-year-old bought
from Shelley Harrison at the
beginning of the year and jointly
owned with Lucinda Campbell.
“He’s cool, a proper

competitive little jumper and now
he’s learning to jump
bigger fences,” said Angie,
who also scored a double with
1.25m and 1.30m wins on
the Cornet Obolensky 13-year-old
Cornet Obolensky Junior.

‘HE’S STILL GOT IT’
SAMMIE COFFIN outpaced all
rivals to lift the Col. JHV Higgon
memorial cup in the 1.40m speed
with her seasoned campaigner, the
Lupicor gelding Willem De Lux.
“He’s 16 now but he’s still got
it,” she said.
Paul Crago made one of
Valentino IX’s last shows a

winningonewiththeNick
Youngman Farrier accumulator.
“He’s 17 now and still spooky.
We’re going to retire him at the
end of the season and he only
has three or four shows left,” said
Paul, who has ridden the gelding
for nine years. “He’s won quite
a lot of money considering he
wouldn’t jump a cross-pole when
we started.” H&H
