headed the maxi cob line-up and

earned his seventh HOYS ticket.

“Isla, one of my dogs, has had

a major operation and then the

weather forecast was so bad,

I wasn’t keen to travel,” said

amateur home-producer Avril,

who has owned Sage for 13 of

his 16 years. “But there are so

few maxi qualifiers and I had a

gut feeling we should try as we

qualified here two years ago,” she

added. “Even though it took us six

hours to get here, to say I’m over

the moon is an understatement.”

CHALLENGING COURSES

BEAU WOOD built a series of

challenging worker courses which,

although perfectly fair, caught out

many partnerships.

Just six of the 23 starters in the

senior Cuddy qualifier came home

clear, so it was a considerable

achievement for last year’s victors,

hunting enthusiasts Tonya Wood

and Rebel Moon, to repeat their

win and claim the ticket.

It was success at the third

qualifying attempt this year

for Louise Bell’s protegees,

Tonya Wood and her Irish-bred

12-year-old, who made their

HOYS debut last year to

finish fourth.

Clears were also elusive in

the native workers, where victory

went to Sarah Parker riding the

Countess of Shrewsbury’s home-

bred nine-year-old 122cm victor
