female line I was given by [former
Wynnstay master and huntsman]
Richard Tyacke,” explained
joint-master and huntsman of the
College Valley Adam Waugh. “I
gave her mother to Guy Landau
when I left the South and West
Wilts and then Guy gave me back
the pick of her litter. My family
walked Gaslight at the farm and
she did very well last year in her
first season’s hunting.
“This line has always produced
great hunters. The Tynedale have
a bitch from the same Eglinton
line that won the championship at
Harrogate this year.”

BORDER HOUND
STANDS TOP

PACKS had come from far afield
and those Fell hounds from packs
like the Eryri in Snowdonia, the
Border or the Pennine, which
were ineligible for the Fell classes,
showed their hounds as hill
hounds. Likewise, Andrew Cook’s
Dumfries and Stewartry hounds
look very modern in type and the
Radnor and West Herefordshire

had some woolly hounds which
also counted as hill hounds.
The Border Grafter won
the stallion hound and was
champion doghound, shown
by their dedicated master and
huntsman Thomas Scott. The
Haydon hounds were prominent

Robert McCarthy is so
enthusiastic that he always sees
the bright side of every situation,
and his old English Percy hounds
had a virtual clean sweep of the
studbook classes. Shaun Marles
was in the ribbons with the
Radnor and West Herefordshire
while his amateur whipper-in
showed some of his other hounds
in the hill hound ring.

THE HOSTS TAKE A TITLE
THE Coniston hunt runs Lowther
show, and what a great result
after all their efforts to see
Dreamer take the Fell hound
championship. The Blencathra
had a good day, winning the
entered doghound with Samson
and the brood bitch with the
veteran Music. Edmund Porter’s
unentered doghound, Eskdale
and Ennerdale Gunner, was
reserve champion and the home
pack the Ullswater, shown by
huntsman John Weller, had some
particularly attractive hounds.
