There was yet more silverware
for the Beaufort Hunt in the
junior boys’ team competition,
their quartet of George Stratton,
Will Connors, Josh Barker and
Orlo Clark pipping East Kent
Hunt by 571 points.
It was a third successive team
title for Will and Josh, in their
last year as juniors, while in the
individual competition Will was
beaten to the top spot by 14 points
by Rhys Smart (Dinas Powys).
“It was a really tight
competition and I’m not the best
runner so it was nerve-racking,”
said Rhys, contesting these
championships for the first time.
The Cardiff-based competitor
recorded 960 in the shooting, won
the swim with a personal best, had
one run out on the cross-country
aboard Red, his 13-year-old
coloured mare, and scored 958
points in the run.
Rhys was joined by his sister
Abi, Morgan Edwards and Amy
Denton to win the junior mixed

team event.
Gina Speakman was in
imperious form once again
in the 91-strong junior girls’
competition, successfully
defending her title in the
individual competition by 16
penalties from East Kent Hunt’s
Sienna Bates and also leading
Ryburn Valley to first place in the
team competition.
“It’s a relief to win as I really
wanted to come here and do it
again,” said Gina, 15. “I didn’t have
the best shoot but I won the swim
and I was in second place by only
a few points at the end of day one,
so I knew I had to go clear cross-
country and then give it my all in
the run.”
Gina joined forces with Verity
Clements and Anna Basford,
fifth individually, to win the team
event, 310 points ahead of East
Kent Hunt.
East Kent Hunt did taste
victory in the intermediate boys’
individual competition, after

Tristan Parmenter improved on
his runner-up finish in the 2018
junior event to triumph on a score
of 4,234. Personal bests in the
running and swimming made up
for a below-par shoot and a stop
on the cross-country.
“I’m pretty chuffed to have
won. I was hoping for a top-five
finish and was pretty disappointed
after the shoot, but the
challenging cross-country really
sorted everyone out,” said the
16-year-old from Folkestone.

DEBUT TEAM ON FORM
NORTH CORNWALL made their
six-hour drive worthwhile when
their trio of Harry Page, Conan
Runnalls and Fraser Foulsham
Rogers headed the intermediate
boys’ team competition.
“It’s the first time we have had

a team here, and while we hoped
to be competitive you are never
sure what the standard will be
like,” said Harry, who occupied
third individually behind Tristan
and runner-up Oscar Hamilton-
Russell (Wheatland Hunt), part
of the quartet who emerged
victorious from the intermediate
mixed team competition.
The South Durham trio of
Alice Darnton, Ellie Howarth
and Sarah Wilcock climbed the
leaderboard after each phase,
rising from fourth after the
shooting to take glory in the
intermediate girls’ team event.
“We are shocked to win,
particularly after we started off
with a bad shoot,” said Ellie. “We
were 11 points behind going into
the run so we knew we had to try
harder than usual.” H&H
