Observed throughout India in September, this
10-day festival celebrates the birth of the Hindu
god Ganesha, the elephant-headed remover of
obstacles and deity of fortune and wisdom. On
the festival’s final day, lavishly decorated clay
idols are carried in processions to rivers
and oceans and ceremoniously immersed,
their dissolution symbolising the Hindu
belief in renewal and eternal change.
