In1998,ColtBlackpowderArms(CBA)
began creatinga newgenerationof Colt
Patersonmodels.Whileitishardlya secret
withinthefirearmsindustry,thesecond-
andthird-generationCBAmodelswere
pr oducedwithpartsmadeto Coltspecifica-
tionsinItalybyUbertiandshippedtothe
U.S.“inthewhite.”Thegunswerehand-
fitted,bluedandcolor-casehardenedusing
Colt’soriginalproprietaryformulas.
CBAwasoriginallyestablishedto
handlethemanufacturingof Colt’ssecond-
generationblackpowdermodels.The
second-generationColtsdidnotincludea
Patersonmodelandareconsideredproducts
ofColt’sPatentFirearmsManufacturing,
whilethethird-generationguns,which
introducedthe 1842 PatersonNo.5 Holster
Model,areregardedasCBAproducts.
They’restillColtsinname,butCBAwasnot
workingdirectlywithColtasithadforthe
secondgeneration.Thenoteworthydiffer-
enceisthatsecond-generationmodelscan
beletteredbytheColtfactorywhilethird-
generationmodelscannot.Intermsofcon-
struction,thereareslightdifferencesinthe
bluing,silverplatingandtheuseofSamuel
Colt’ssignatureonthebackstrapsofthird-
generationmodelstoquicklydifferentiate
th emfromthesecondgeneration.
Thethird-generationCBAPaterson—
consideredthefirstColt-brandedPaterson
in 150 years—wasintroducedin 1998 asa
deluxemodelwithhandengravingandgold
barrel,cylinderandrecoilshieldbands.The
designwascopiedfromoriginalengraved
No.5 models.Thesewerealwaysmadein
very limitededitions(sellingfor$4,500

Originally made only as a hand-engraved
deluxe model (left), it was among the
rarest of the third-generation Colts, along
with the 1860 Army Tiffany model and
the Cochise 3rd Model Dragoon.
