German designer Stefan Diez has comea long way since he
studied industrial design under Richard Sapper at the State Acad-
emy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and collaborated with Konstantin Gr-
cic. Diez, who founded hisown studio in Munich, believes that de-
sign is all about technique and innovation, and is also an expression
of freedom. So,now that he is teaching at the University of Applied
Arts in Vienna, he gets hisstudents involved in experiments, such
as theFittingsandJointsprojects, produced together with the
Blumbrand and brought to Design Week. In Milan, wealso saw
Diez’s new colour palette for the E12Houdinichair, to mark its tenth
birthday; theCostumesectional sofa for Magis, with recycled plas-
tic frame and easy-to-remove covers featuringan interestingelas-
tic loop mechanism; and thePlusminuslighting system for Vibia
(with Arthur Desmet), where each lighting element is simply hooked
onto a smart elastic fabric with conductive properties, so is both
the structure and the energysource. ○
