the countrythiscomplex– which covers 8600squareme-

tres– hascommonareasandfacilities: a vegetable garden,

a play room,anareafor socialization,a wasteandrecy-

clingzoneandthe CommonHouse withthree bedrooms

thatcanbebookedbyresidentstoput upguests. Multigen-

erational andmulti-ethnic (11differentnationalities), the

complexhouseseight familieswith 14 children,sevensin-

gles, 10couplesandfoursinglepensioners. “Theinvolve-

mentright fromthe earlystages ofplanningwas decisive,”

saysFrances, who movedhere withherhusbandwhentheir

childrenbegantostudy awayfromhome.“We were ableto

choose the sizeofhomethatbestsuited usandwedecided

howtoorganizethe commonareasinadvancewithour

neighbours. Thishashelpedcreatee sense ofcommunity.”
