HOW TO

create a low-

allergen garden

It’s estimated two out of five
Australians suffer from hay
fever, asthma or some other
form of environmental allergy,
especially in spring. But that
doesn’t mean you have to lock
yourself indoors. The most
common allergy triggers in our
gardens include pollens, mould
spores in mulch, skin irritants
and chemical sprays. Eliminate
these and you’ll reclaim your
outside privileges! To start,
choose trees and plants that
are pollinated by insects or
birds rather than the wind

  • thankfully the list of safe
options is long; ask your local
nursery to assist. Also look for
    low-pollen grasses that don’t
    need frequent mowing, such as
    Santa Ana and Windsor Green
    couch, or consider replacing
with a ground cover or pebbles.
    Go natural with pesticides and
    fertilisers and always wear
    gloves when handling mulch
    and compost. R

indoor growing tip The most common cause

of death among houseplants is overwatering. As

a rule, the thicker a plant’s leaves, the less water

it needs. Light conditions also play a part – the

more light absorbed, the more watering required.
