THE VERY CONCEPT OF A FOREVER HOME insists that every detail should make your heart sing.
But while the owners of this property in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs were enamoured with its incredible
views and location, they were underwhelmed by the decor. Despite being only 10 years old, the home
bore the architectural mirth of that decade, something they were keen to erase and refine. They enlisted
the help of Nina Maya of Nina Maya Interiors, providing a brief that was shaped by a love of international
travel, and that sense of comfort and opulence you experience when you step into a five-star hotel.
TACTILE APPEAL Due to the four-bedroom, triple-level home’s impressive scale, incorporating a layer of
cosiness was a high priority. Nina did this through her use of tactile, natural materials – marble, silk, linen
and oak. “Our focus was on a tonal colour palette of soft neutrals and a touch of blush that wouldn’t detract
from the harbour views,” Nina says. The windows and joinery were custom-designed and manufactured,
and furniture and accessories have been positioned to support family time and the owners’ social lifestyle.
NO STONE UNTURNED “To give each of my projects an eclectic and unique feel, I love to source one-
off vintage items from local showrooms such as The Vault Sydney and Conley & Co and mix them back
with European designs from brands such as Cassina, Molteni&C and Meridiani,” Nina says. Recurring
curved, circular and elliptical shapes create a comforting atmosphere, with the feminine lines balanced
within the robust architecture. The home is both an ideal entertaining space and the perfect playground
for this young family of four, with dinner frequently enjoyed out on the terrace. “We tried to keep the look
of the design sophisticated while making sure everything was practical for a busy family,” Nina says. R
