36 SEPTEMBER 2019

We need to be aware of where all our materials are sourced,
and whether they’re sustainable and eco-friendly; we have to
keep our footprint as small as possible.
We are currently working on growing our brand, making
beautiful furniture more accessible to the young and upcoming
professionals who have an appreciation for form/design as well
as function/comfort. Q

ultiply Furniture
is a Cape Town-
based company
that designs,
manufactures and
retails a range of Scandinavian-
inspired furniture using both cutting-edge technology and
age-old carpentry methods. With a background in exhibition
stand design, Alice Taylor’s passion is to uplift people in the
local community, and as a result the company has a mixed bag
of people working together with incredible results. All their
furniture is hand-finished and the timber used is sustainable as
it is harvested from farmed forests.

Our interest in design is an organic one. You are born a creative,
and, if you happen to be fortunate enough, you find yourself
among peers who inspire and drive you to follow your passion.
We are inspired by our surroundings. As a Capetonian you
are spoilt for choice – we have the sea, the mountains and our
stunning flora to draw inspiration from.
We work together as a team, and collaborate with local
architects and interior designers.
Favourite local designers – as an established designer it would
have to be Tristan du Plessis, and an up-and-coming design
student we have our eye on is Brogan Poulton.
One of our designs was featured at Young Presidents’
Organisation (YPO) this year. It was our take on the iconic
staircase from Gone with the Wind, meant to create a sense of
drama, which it did.
South African design is at a point where we are seen as the
country to watch. We live in a country that does not obey or
live by rules and as a result it seems to have given us a sense
of freedom in our design. We don’t colour inside the lines. We
aren’t hemmed in. Creativity is just a way of life.
Sustainable design is important for our future generations.
