On the morning of July 16, I helped
to announce the Emmy Award
nominations for the first time, and I
have to tell you, it was a blast. What
a wonderful way to kick off the 71st
Emmy season!
The hosts of the announcement cer-
emony, Ken Jeong and D’Arcy Carden, were
wonderful. Ken, of course, has a long list of
very funny TV and film credits and is a judge on
Fox’s reality competition, The Masked Singer;
D’Arcy costars in two Emmy-nominated com-
edies, NBC’s The Good Place and HBO’s Barry.
Together, they brought professionalism — and
laughs — to the festivities.
More television is being produced than ever before, and the number of scripted series is on pace
to exceed 500 by year’s end. This content boom has brought heightened attention to the Emmys — no
wonder our nominations announcement was buzzing with greater anticipation than ever.
The people and programs nominated this year reflected the vast range of contemporary television,
with strong representation from the broadcast networks, basic cable, premium cable and streamers.
And, just as every good story has a beginning, middle and end, nominees included several first-year
shows, established returnees and long-running favorites in their final seasons.
This varied mix is sure to make for excitement when we announce the Emmy winners next month.
I could not be more excited for our industry as it continues to impress us with the premium quality of
content that is entertaining us all.
For coverage of this year’s nominations announcement, please turn to page 114. And remember: the
Creative Arts Emmys will once again be held across two nights — Saturday, September 14, and Sunday,
September 15 — at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. An edited telecast of the Creative Arts shows
will air Saturday, September 21, at 8 p.m. on FXX. The Emmy Awards telecast will air live on Fox on Sunday,
September 22 (8 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Pacific), also from the Microsoft Theater.
