T

here have been few Grand
Tour victories as dominant as
Tony Rominger’s at the Vuelta
in 1994. Taking the yellow
jersey in the opening time trial, he never
relinquished it and crossed the finish line
in Madrid as race leader. He might even
have won the points jersey as well had
Laurent Jalabert not won that final stage
to secure it for himself.
In the process he notched up another
time trial win and wins in two of the
mountain stages.
His Vuelta victory was historic as it
capped a trio of successive wins at the
race, a record that is still yet to be broken.
Plus, it was the final edition to be held in
the spring as the following year the Vuelta
moved to its current late-summer slot in
the cycling calendar.
It was a banner year for the Swiss rider
as in November and October he would
go on to set successively longer Hour
records, the second one of 55.291k m was
actually slightly longer than the current
UCI Hour record of Victor Campenaerts
under the 2014 revised rules.
