office. A man hurries in.
“Hello, my name is Stuart Maxwell,”
he says. “Are you Laura Copp?”
“Yes, I am,” answers Laura. “Can I help
you with something?”
“I hope so,” says Stuart. “Someone in
my office is a thief.”
“What did he or she steal?” asks Laura.
“Some very special earrings,” he says.
“They were going to be a birthday gift.”Stuart has two girls, and they are twins.
Their 16th birthday is next week. Stuart
bought each of them a pair of earrings.
“Are the earrings the same?” asks
Laura.
“Almost,” says Stuart. “Just the stones
are different. One pair has rubies.”
“So the stones are red,” says Laura.
“Yes. And the other pair has emeralds,”
he says.
“So the stones are green,” says Laura.
“Yes,” says Stuart. “The thief stole the
emerald ones!”“Why didn’t the thief take both pairs?”
asks Laura.
“I have no idea,” says Stuart. “Maybe
they just like emeralds.”
“So what happened?” asks Laura.
“I went to the jewelry store to get the
earrings,” says Stuart. “Then I went back
to my office.”They were going to be a birthday
gift.
