STUDY | DECORATION

  1. FIXTURES AND FURNISHINGS

“A study is somewhere to reflect, to contemplate and to
plan,” says Timothy. “It’s an intimate space and it needs to feel
truly like you. Only choose pieces thatyou love and feel inspired
by, rather than getting swept up in thelatest trends,”he adds.
“I believe the study should feellike part of the home and
not an office,” says Lucia, who emphasisesthat the same amount
of attention should go into this areaas, say, a living or dining
room – just because it is conceived toperforma specificpurpose
does not mean it should be treatedas purely practical.“Stay
away from metal filing cabinets andtraditionaloffice chairs ,
and find comfortable upholstered seating,”she adds. Before
even considering how you would likeyour home office to look,
it is wise to think about how you wantit to work for you. Lucia
agrees: “The function of the room playsa big part in the design
process.” If you have the space, a separatestudy can benefit
from a bearing marked aesthetic departurefrom the rest of your
home. However, if you are incorporatingan office into another
part of the home, you might want to make the transitionless
discernibleso that it is not distracting.
“Make sure you have ample light sources,”advisesLucia.
“Weatherand time affect naturallight supply, you want to
make sure you have optionsthat match your tasks – dimmable
overheadfor daytime, and a good desk lamp for readingand
writing,”she adds. A sculpturalessentialoil diffuseris a valuable
additionto any desk, its sundryscents capableof creating
differentmoodsand, in doing so, aiding productivity.Open
storageworks well in a study as it means that everythingis visible
and to hand. However,if you know you lack the time or have
no desire to tidy up your office, opt for a desk with drawers
that allow you to hide a multitudeof sins. Alternatively,curtain-
frontedshelvingtoes the line betweenhaving everythingon
display and offeringa way to concealclutter. Lucia says, “A plush
rug goes a long way – after all, most of us are barefootat home.”

Lucia
Lucia
