Among the highlights of the July 8-Aug.
8 trip through the Upper Midwest:
- A freight of 21 covered hoppers from the
locomotive’s home base in Cheyenne, Wyo.,
to the world’s largest yard in North Platte. - A 15-car excursion to benefit the UP
Museum from Omaha to Boone, Iowa on
Chicago & North Western tracks on July 15,
including the new Kate Shelley bridge.
- Salutes from local celebrities in the Hawk-
eye State with appearances by Iowa Traction
electrics from the 1920s and 1950s Rock
Island E units on the Iowa Northern.
- A side trip from St. Paul, Minn., to Duluth,
Minn., via BNSF Railway trackage rights to
visit the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. - Display at UP’s training center in West
Chicago, Ill., echoing Big Boy displays at the
Chicago Railroad fairs of 1948 and 1949. - Big Boy passing under C&NW coaling
towers still in existence at Clyman Junction,
Wis.; Dekalb, Ill.; and Nelson, Ill.
No. 4014 is set to venture to Southern
California for an Oct. 12 and 13 excursion
across Cajon Pass. Expect the excursion to
be part of an extensive tour of more parts
of the UP system. The mainline steam loco-
