tion, wilderness still extended eastward
from the mountains. During the nation’s
first few decades, the Piedmont became the
frontier — the restless edge of settlement
and civilization. By the time of the coming
of the railroads in the 1850s — the B&O
reached Wheeling in 1853; the Pennsylva-
nia reached Pittsburgh the following year
— the frontier had already leapfrogged the
Appalachians and even the Mississippi
River. During the next two or three genera-
tions, the Piedmont developed the charac-
ter that we associate with it today: largely
