TULAMBEN, BALI,
INDONESIA
BEHIND THE SHOT: During a
black-water dive near Tulamben,
a reef squid swam in close,
seemingly interested in our
lights. After photographing it
a couple of times with regu-
lar camera settings for black-
water dives, I noticed the squid
planned to stick around. So I
tried using some different cam-
era settings and experimented
with slow shutter speed to get
a nice soft shadow of the squid
itself. It took a few attempts to
get a good result—and it helped
to set the strobes to fire on sec-
ond curtain.
