REAPING THE

REWARDS OF

REVAMPED BT

MURRAYFIELD

n 2014, when BT Murrayfield
became infested with aggressive
roundworm parasites called
nematodes, the entire pitch required a
complete refurbishment.
As the venue of all of the Scottish national
rugby team’s home games as well as other
significant Scottish sporting events, the
refurbishment of the pitch was no small
task, but Aggregate Industries was up to the
challenge.
Its success was such that Aggregate
Industries, leading suppliers to the
construction and infrastructure markets,
now has a long-standing partnership with
Scotland’s national stadium.
Speaking to SCRUM on the matter, Sales
Manager Duncan McCool said: “Such is
Aggregate Industries expansive product
portfolio, we were able to offer bespoke
solutions for the full pitch profile during the
reconstruction of the BT Murrayfield pitch
back in 2014 and every year since”.
“The award winning BT Murrayfield Grounds
Team goes through a renovation in the off-
season removing all the natural grass surface,
basically starting from scratch again to ensure
the surface is of the highest quality for the

following season. We supply Jim Dawson,
Head Groundsman at BT Murrayfield, and
his team, with our Levenseat ProPitch
25 specialist sand as part of their annual
renovation process.”
Originally, the specialist sand required for
the refurbishment was not available on the
market, and that meant Aggregate Industries
had to get creative.
“The designers came up with their
specifications for the sand used in the
pitch profile and that product didn’t exist,”
explained Duncan.
“So we met with our operations team Charles
McQuade (Area Operations Manager) and
Ian Laird (Quarry Manager) giving them the
challenge of innovating within our operational
process in order to produce it. With such a
high-profile project, we had to make sure
the product was exactly what the client had
requested.
“Our unique production plant and process at
Levenseat Specialist Sand Quarry ensured
we were able to do that. The fully-automated
and computer-controlled system gives
us the ability to make fine adjustments,
creating bespoke products whilst retaining
consistency and quality in the end product.”
“This differentiates us from our competitors,
and the consistency of the aggregate, sand
and Rootzone supplied to BT Murrayfield was
second to none.”
Indeed, although the job was "high-profile
and high pressure", the chance to be aligned
with the national stadium was too good to
miss, and the project has since paved the
way for Aggregate Industries’ involvement in
similar ventures, although not always for the
sport of rugby.
“It’s a fantastic showcase for us, and we're
very proud to have been involved in the

project,” Duncan told SCRUM.
“It has paved the way for other projects,
and now some of the Scottish Premier
League football teams are investing in the
ProPitch Range following our success with
BT Murrayfield. Last year, for instance, we
supplied Hearts FC with their full new pitch
profile.”
Indeed, customer satisfaction is the primary
concern for Aggregate Industries.
“Customers have to put their trust in us that
we are giving them what we say we are and
that it will deliver the level of performance
they demand. I feel we guarantee a
consistency of product and service, which is
key when projects are time constrained such
as the BT Murrayfield Project and Heart’s new
pitch,” the Sales Manager added.
"That pays off in the end, because
groundsmen share best practice and
knowledge across the industry, and that can
lead them back to us as a supplier.
“We prefer to let our Levenseat products
do the selling, and that's what they’ve been
doing with great success throughout the
sports surface market.”
