fter four years of waiting, the
2019 Rugby World Cup is now
just around the corner. This
year’s tournament will be the ninth in the
competition’s history, and for the very first
time heads to Asia and the host country
of Japan.
The hype and anticipation is rife as we
count down the days to the opening
match between Japan and Russia
at Tokyo’s Ajinomoto Stadium on 20
September. How will Scotland fare in what
could be a tough pool alongside Japan,
Russia, Ireland and Samoa? Can the All
Blacks take a record fourth and
third straight World Cup title? If not, who
will be the ones to stop them? Will we see
an all new World Cup winner? All will be
answered over the course of the next two
months.
At the time of writing, Wales are the
world’s top-ranked side for the first time,
Warren Gatland’s side having gone on a
superb run over the last 12 months; while
the All Blacks have dropped to number
two for the first time in a decade.
Joe Schmidt’s Ireland are third, with
the resurgent Springboks in fourth and
England, led by Eddie Jones, in fifth place
and all looking to mount a challenge.
Another nation on the comeback trail after
some difficult times, Australia, are in sixth
place in the world rankings, with France in
seventh and Scotland making up the top
eight.
The home nation could well spring a few
surprises - they are ninth in the world
and will look to their supporters for extra
motivation, while the entertaining Fijians
round out the world’s best 10 sides.
In this consummate 40-page World Cup
preview feature, SCRUM puts each of
these 10 nations under the microscope
and assesses their chances in the
upcoming Rugby World Cup.
The squads’ World Cup histories and
special moments, recent form, key squad

weaknesses have all been identified,
so now it’s up to you to decipher all this
information and pick your winner.
