he first Scottish member of the
Design Hotels™ brand, Market Street
Hotel is a luxury hotel that aims to
allow its guests the chance to experience the
city as a local.
Speaking to SCRUM, General Manager Jill
Darling explained: “We have been chosen
to be part of a carefully curated collection
of hotels with a shared passion for genuine,
culturally rooted hospitality.
“We call our hotels ‘local heroes’, all distinctive
in their local markets and perfectly in tune with
their locations, and our team at Market Street
have all been recruited for their knowledge
and love of our city so that our guests can
explore Edinburgh like a local.
“We opened our doors to the public on
9 August - right in the middle of the Festival,”
Jill continued.
“Some people might think we were mad to
open at the busiest time of the year but the
team have handled the pressure brilliantly and
it’s wonderful to have opened when there is
such a great energy in the city!”
Indeed, straddling the Old and New Towns
and close to the vibrant gastro-scene and
nightlife of St Andrew Square as well as the

Royal Mile, the hotel’s location provides guests
with a perfect base from which to enjoy the
Festival as well as all that the city of Edinburgh
has to offer.
It is the hotel’s design, however, that
distinguishes it from its competitors, according
to Jill.
“The design of Market Street hotel is
something that really stands out from the
crowd,” the General Manager said.
“Although Edinburgh has some beautiful
and iconic luxury hotels, many are traditional
in style, and as a city, we are guilty of
being a little behind some of our European
counterparts where you’ll find plenty of
innovative designs and concepts.
“But our hotel, built on a gap site located
within the world famous Edinburgh skyline, is
both of its time and place and respectful of its
World Heritage context.
“The folded stone clad hotel roof that houses
our rooftop Champagne lounge, Nor’ Loft, is
truly unique and is designed to blend into the
rooftops of the Old Town, the dramatic skyline
of the Royal Mile and beyond.”
The interiors are similarly bold, and, created
by acclaimed design studio FG Stijl, they take

inspiration from the dark and storied history
of Edinburgh’s Old Town, further deepening
the hotel’s ties with one of Scotland’s most
culturally rich cities.
While the Festival is likely the hotel’s busiest
period, self-proclaimed rugby fan Jill looks
forward to the hustle and bustle of the Six
Nations, which looks set to be another
excellent period for the hotel.
Looking ahead to the competition, Jill
revealed: “We were completely full for the
Scotland vs France game and are already
seeing bookings come through for the other
game weekends too.
“There will be no better match warm-up than
with a hearty cooked breakfast, made to order
in Nor’ Loft while enjoying our stunning views
of the city’s skyline.
“Our whisky list is pretty special so we
anticipate that Nor’ Loft, with it’s stunning
seventh floor view of the city, will be a firm
favourite for a post-match celebration (or
commiseration!) too!
