tate-of-art health and relaxation
facilities are on offer at Float
Philosophy, based in the west
end of Edinburgh, and the facilities are
ideal to aid rugby players in their recovery
post-match.
Nick Kneebone, business owner, spoke
to SCRUM about what they can offer, and
explained the background to the business.
“Although the practice of Floatation
Therapy has been around since the 1970s,
it has only become popular worldwide
over the last few years due to an influx of
scientific studies on the subject - which
have shown remarkable health benefits.
“It's an amazing way to relieve stress and
anxiety, recover from workouts and/or
injuries, reduce chronic pain, lower blood
pressure, and improve general wellbeing.”
A standard session at Float Philosophy is
an hour long, but sessions can last up to
three hours.
Nick explained more about what clients
experience when they visit. He continued:
“Imagine yourself resting peacefully in 10
inches of heated epsom-salt water that is
so dense, it requires no effort whatsoever
to simply float.
“Now picture an environment that’s
perfectly designed to eliminate all

stimulation. There’s no pressure on
your body, no external light, no noise
or distractions - just pure bliss. Under
these unique conditions, your mind and
body will be free to enter a state of deep
relaxation.”
Nick, who set up Float Philosophy in March
this year, also explained why it is the ideal
recovery tool for any sportsperson.
“Recovery is vitally important in all
sports but particularly in rugby which is
arguably the most mentally and physically
demanding sport on the planet.
“While in a float tank you are essentially
suspended in a zero-gravity environment
which allows blood flow to increase
throughout the body, this promotes the
removal of lactic acid and accelerates
muscular repair.
"Our tanks also have the added benefit
of being saturated with over half a tonne
of Epson Salts which have medicinal
properties of their own - Pain Relief,
Anti-inflammatory, Draw out toxins from
bloodstream etc. In regards to mental
recovery - while floating, you are
essentially 'offline' with minimal to no
external stimuli.
“As your brain doesn’t have any
information to process it naturally slows

down and you will enter a deep meditative
state. While floating most people are
somewhere in between sleeping and
wakefulness - either way you will step
out of the tank feeling refreshed and
rejuvenated.”
And while they’ve only been open for
a short number of months, a number of
international stars - both male and female -
have already paid a visit.
Nick added that, as well as continuing
their work with sportspeople, Float
Philosophy will, before the end of the year,
offer ‘corporate retreats’ to businesses.
“This will involve 9-12 members of staff
from any organisation spending the day
at our facility in the aim of lowering stress
levels and improving staff morale.
“Each member of staff will enjoy a
60-minute float session and also take
part in other wellness activities such as
yoga, meditation and functional range
conditioning. Staff members will also be
treated to a healthy organic lunch and a
selection of herbal teas.”
