ith the Rugby World Cup just around
the corner, Wattbike are helping
power the players to performance
success. The creators of the world’s most
advanced indoor bikes have sold 180
Wattbikes to the organising committee, which
are to be placed in every training site and
match venue supporting the World Cup.
With its impressive elite sport heritage the
Wattbike is today the go-to power based
training tool for all rugby players, regardless
of position. At the World Cup the Wattbikes
will be playing an important role in keeping
the teams fit, as well as sustaining and
improving performance throughout the
championship.
The versatility of the Wattbike is one of
its most important features. Depending
on the specific demands of each player’s
role within the team, coaches can set very
different Wattbike workouts as part of their
overall conditioning programme. As well
as measuring maximum power output, the
Wattbike forms a crucial part of rugby strength
and conditioning training programmes,
recovery, and key aerobic and anaerobic
training.
Shane Carney, Athletic Performance and
Conditioning Coach at Ulster Rugby, said:
“What the bike really lets us do is it lets us
account for the actual physiological makeup
of that person. It gets rid of the stresses of
on field work and running, as well as forces
going through joints, tendons etc. and really
allows us to target the physiological makeup
of that person and improve them from there.”
Tom Clough, Head of Athletic Performance at
Ulster Rugby, added: “We started using the
Wattbikes once or twice a week, but now we
use it most training days. It’s all about using
the testing data from the Wattbikes to really
create bespoke individual programmes.”

The Wattbike also plays a key role in
helping injured players to continue with
cardiovascular and power work, taking
advantage of the
off-feet, non-loading sessions available
through indoor cycling.
On the topic of off-feet conditioning,
Dr Nic Gill, New Zealand rugby’s strength
and conditioning coach, commented: “Off-
feet conditioning involves any training where
we’re not loading the body through the feet.
Using the Wattbike for this increases player
longevity, improves conditioning, prevents
injuries and maximises performance. It
teaches our players to train their energy
systems and recover effectively. The power,
the pacing and wattage are all massively
important - the joy of the Wattbike is that it
can be used for so many different reasons.
The application to sport specific training is
great, suitable for everything and anything.”

Whether you are an elite rugby player looking
to improve performance, or a sofa spectator
wanting to take the first step to a healthier,
fitter you, the Wattbike is suitable for you, no
matter your ability or goal.
Richard Baker, Managing Director at
Wattbike, added: “Wattbike was founded
on being the world’s most accurate, reliable
and measurable cycling ergometer. This,
combined with our unique resistance systems
offers the complete off-feet training tool.
Over the past five years we have worked with
top rugby players and teams from around
the world to understand the best ways the
Wattbike can be used to enhance player
performance.”
