Red meat, such as Scotch
Beef PGI, Scotch Lamb PGI
and Specially Selected Pork,
provides the body with all eight
essential amino acids required
by adults. These are crucial for
growth, maintenance and repair
of our bodies. Further, red meat
contains the branch chain amino
acid (BCAA) - leucine. Leucine is
the most effective amino acid in
stimulating muscle growth.
What about the micronutrients
of red meat?
Each type of red meat
contains different amounts of
micronutrients, so it is good to be
aware for your nutrition.
Iron - Beef is richest in haeme-
iron - the most easily absorbed
form. Iron is essential for
energy metabolism, cognitive
development, the formation of
red blood cells and a normal
functioning immune system. Iron
is key for us to transport oxygen
around our bodies, meaning you
cope better with lactic acid build
up in your muscles.
Zinc - Red meat is the only
source of absorbable zinc in
our diets and a lean 100g steak
contains around 5.6g of zinc,
contributing to about one third of
our daily recommended intake.
Beef, lamb and pork all contain

zinc which is key for muscle
recovery.
B-Vitamins - The main function
of the B-vitamin complex is to
transfer our food into usable
energy. Red meat contains a
number of these B-vitamins
which all work as a vehicle
to boost exercise capacity
and reduce the fatigue from
strenuous exercise.
B1 (Thiamine) - Pork is a rich
source of B1 which plays a crucial
role to create energy.

B2 (Riboflavin) - Beef and pork
both contain B2 which works as
an antioxidant by mopping up
free radicals produced during
intense exercise whilst helping
you to fight fatigue.
B3 (Niacin) - Beef, lamb and pork
are all rich sources. Niacin helps
to facilitate the repair process
and converts food into energy.

B6 - Beef is a rich source and is
vital for normal immune function,
nerve function as well as
regulation of blood sugar levels.
B12 - Beef, lamb and pork are
natural rich sources of vitamin
B12. It is a building block of red
blood cells and helps us fight
fatigue.
