ummer blockbusters
were transformed when
Jaws took a huge bite out of
the box office in 1975. This
success has been attempted
many times since, with varying
success. While Crawl is no
Jaws, it certainly has many
of the same ingredients; a
likeable protagonist, a larger
than life threat and genuine
jump out of your seat scares.
Set in Florida during an
impending hurricane, Hayley
(played by Skins actress Kaya
Scodelario) is intent on searching for her missing father. What
she finds, however, are huge alligators infesting her once
charming hometown. The hungry ’gators have used the
stormy conditions and subsequent apocalyptic flooding to
venture around her neighbourhood and Hayley soon finds
herself in a reptilian version of cat and mouse. Produced by
Sam Raimi, of The Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe fame, what
sets Crawl apart is that it’s as ridiculous as it is scary, and this
combination ensures it keeps audiences gripped in its teeth
during the whirlwind 90-minute ride. SU ★ ★ ★ ★
